We recently connected with Erika Millard and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Erika thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I was pregnant with my first child & working for a corporate accounting job that I loved due to the amazing people I worked with, but feeling really torn. Working 50-60 hours a week was not something I wanted to do when my new baby was born. So I asked my boss at the time if I could work from home, & he said no (which is funny because now the entire department works from home but this was back in 2017). I had already been considering starting my own business, but I wasn’t really sure if that was the path I wanted to take.
During my maternity leave, a girl I had babysat years before was now grown & heading to college. She asked if we could meet so she could hear about the different opportunities within accounting because she was considering it for her major. So we met at Starbucks & were chatting & a man overheard us, leaned over & said, “Well I could really use someone & I don’t care if you work from home!” And he became my first client!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey, I’m Erika Millard, a bookkeeping expert and host of the Get Comfy with Numbers podcast, ranked in the top 2.5% globally. I help female business owners feel confident and in control of their finances, whether that’s learning how to do their own bookkeeping in QuickBooks or getting hands-on support from me & my team. I started my own bookkeeping business after seeing so many women avoid their numbers out of fear or confusion, only to realize that financial clarity changes everything. It brings peace of mind, better decisions, and real progress toward their goals. Through my courses, membership, and full-service offerings, I make bookkeeping simple, approachable, and even a little fun. What sets me apart is that I don’t just “do the books”—I teach business owners how to understand them, so they can finally see what’s working in their business and what’s not. I’m most proud of the hundreds of business owners who’ve told me they no longer dread looking at their numbers. That transformation, seeing them go from overwhelmed to confident, is what drives everything I do.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What’s helped me build my reputation is that I’m not your typical “stuffy numbers person.” I love taking complex financial topics and breaking them down in a way that feels simple, relatable, and easy to understand. I bring humor, cozy vibes, and a no-judgment approach to everything I do, which is so different from what most people expect when they think of bookkeeping or accountants. That approachable style helps my clients feel comfortable opening up about their business finances and move past any shame or embarrassment they’ve felt around money.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been my podcast, Get Comfy with Numbers! It’s been incredible to see how the show not only builds authority but also helps potential clients feel like they already know and trust me before we ever talk. The podcast gives them a taste of my teaching style—approachable, practical, and jargon-free—and that connection often leads them to reach out for help with their bookkeeping. I’ve also found that listeners share episodes with friends or business peers, which has organically grown my audience and client base in such a genuine way.
