We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erika Livingston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Erika thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Our company, A Cakeful of Joy, was named after my late mother Sylvia Joy Livingston. She is the reason our business is here today. I learned everything I know about baking from her. Everyone would be so excited when she would make them a cake or cheesecake, so the name kind of came naturally when thinking about it.
Erika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A Cakeful of Joy is an online bakery that specializes in making homemade cakes and treats. We take pride in using natural ingredients and having a quick turnaround time. We are most excited about being able to continue to use our tried and true recipes and still be able to create and try new things, keeping the rich flavors in tack. We recently just published our cookbook, “The Joy of Baking”, which is available on Amazon, and we are very proud of this accomplishment.
I want the world to know that A Cakeful of Joy is committed to bringing a piece of joy into every cake and treat you order from us. We strive to make it feel like a special occasion every time you do business with us. Our brand was built on the foundation of joy and love, and let’s face it, you can never have to much of that!
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We do sell our cakes on our website at www.acakefulofjoy.org. We do take local and out of town orders, and we do ship within the United States. The choice to sell on our website was the most universal and convenient way to sell our bakery products. We can keep track of orders, due dates, shipping costs, and even marketing through the platform we use. We also use Amazon to sell our first published cookbook, “The Joy of Baking” by Erika Livingston and Taelyn Phillips. We felt this was the best platform for customers who wanted to purchase our book.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been using social media platforms. Since we are a bakery, we have to make sure our products are visible, that we share tips and tricks people would want to know, and share any specials we have or what we have going on with the company.
Another effective strategy we have found is attending festivals, fairs, other vendor opportunities. This is another way we get our product out there and share our story. We have gained new customers this way and it has been very rewarding for business.
