We were lucky to catch up with Erika Arora recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erika, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I was raised in a household where creativity was made a priority.
My parents always allowed me to doodle from the age I could hold a pen. It comes at no surprise that my first form of artistic expression was drawing. When I was only four years old, I drew a person in my mother’s journal and wrote beside them, “I love to draw because you can draw beautiful things.” That still resonates with me today. I love art because creation is endless.
From a very young age, I started collecting rocks and seashells. My dad would hold a bucket every time we went to a beach just for me to do my hunting and gathering of shells. Did I have any idea this would turn into an obsession with crystals? Of course not. Yet, it did.
Here we are today, my parents just as excited as I am with every sale and positive review obtained. Every birthday, my mom and I will venture to the crystal store and explore, and my dad gives me new art supplies that I’ve been wanting. My parents met at the Detroit Institute of Arts and my grandma was an artist, so I know this passion runs deep in my soul.
I could not have asked for a more supportive upbringing into the world of art than the one from my parents.
Erika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Erika Sejal Arora, and I created the company Sejal’s Shop (Say-jal).
I am a creative who works with no central medium. My art is eclectic and different, customizable and fun, and most of all, I make products that help with your natural well-being! Confused? Let’s break it down together.
My handmade health and wellness products aid numerous types of pain and ailments with limited, all-natural ingredients.
Feeling anxious? Rub on some, “Liquid Chill”, a homemade, crystal-infused essential oil blend that naturally reduces anxiety, light my decorated candle called, “Deep Calm”, and pick up some amethyst and lapis lazuli crystals to help return to a calm state.
The products I make are all customizable to each client to ensure the most effective relief of symptoms. I take great pride in showing people the ingredients I use. I only add what is absolutely necessary and natural, with no chemicals or harsh ingredients added.
Commissions are welcome and encouraged, especially if you or someone you love is suffering from emotional or physical pain.
From a ten pound smoky quartz crystal skull, to making custom wedding favors using epoxy resin and soap, Sejal’s Shop is sure to cater to your wants and needs.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Even though I dream of everyone purchasing my art and wellness products, I know it is not always possible to buy something you want or need. I would love to support all local businesses, yet cannot buy something from everyone.
So, how can we support local creatives without spending a penny?
1. Tell friends and family about them. Word of mouth recommendations go far!
2. Follow their creative socials, sign up for their newsletter, and most importantly, engage with them.
3. Show support by attending events, volunteering time to help out local businesses, and voice your amazement at their craft.
4. Never ask for free or discounted items.
5. Make a purchase when you are able to.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a creative soul is like having a secret superpower. The most rewarding part for me is the complete freedom it brings. Imagine having a canvas or a blank page in front of you, and the only limit is your imagination.
Creating something from scratch and watching it take shape in any form of expression is incredibly fulfilling. There’s a profound joy in bringing an idea to life, giving it color, shape, and substance. It’s leaving something tangible that speaks your truth in the world.
The creative process itself is a journey of self-discovery. Through art, you learn about yourself—your passions, fears, and desires. There’s vulnerability in that, and also immense strength.
Creativity is a way of living that colors every aspect of life with beauty, depth, and meaning.
