We recently connected with Ericson Ekeleme and have shared our conversation below.
Ericson , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Well for starters I’d say my journey in music has been everything but easy. I first knew I wanted to follow music professionally when I made a demo song one night when I woke up after a recording session I finished late in the morning like I always do, from 10pm to 7am sometimes 8 or 9 in the mornings freestyling, mixing and mastering finishing up adlibs, cleaning the overall demo song I didn’t get to many views but I was contacted by busta rymthes himself and he asked me “ok I see you, let’s do something” and i broke down I finally was getting the recognition for my hard work from A list artist that have a deep impact in the music industry.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the music industry being different from other artist as you can see from my Instagram where I post majority of my music I don’t have an Apple Music or Spotify with songs on it. I don’t look at my self as a rapper look at me as an artist everything from the freestyle writing to mixing is all originally me, one of my strong suits is dropping music constantly and since I do everything my self so I can drop music maybe 3-4 times a week and promote it through tiktok gaining some views but also gaining a cross platform audience. Providing new music with hiphop style visuals that I select, I believe every song needs a good and catchy visual theme that’s why I consider myself an artist because I have a keen eye to match visuals with my music it’s art at the end of the day, that’s why I want to direct my own music videos one day. I’m not here to sell a service I’m here to show that I have created a network of a list media artist and celebrities with out being the next big artist on the big screen
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Everybody’s definition of success is different, not everyone is going to cheer for you and less and less people will understand how u feel once u grow as an creative, there’s a black and white standard of success everybody follows y’all know the million views on YouTube and a stack of money a nice car but I’m not like most people as an artist I enjoying creating art and I define art as music and visuals coming together to mix and catch the eye of the watcher, if you enjoy what you do, you shouldn’t base your journey on getting a million views to be successful follow your dreams in what you love to and enjoy the road and in my opinion the best success is turning your dreams into a source that provides money, value and also peace and fulfillment it’s all about who you meet on your journey not the start and end but the start and end are the most two important points of the road. God bless
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are many videos I have gained knowledge from but one of the more recent videos that stood out to me was a YouTube interview with the artist makonnen and he was explaining how he came up in the Atlanta scene, his view on the music industry caught my attention because it’s how I feel about music’s current state ,your passion in music could be the love of your life but the music industry is a business at the end of the day, theres a lot that comes into play when you give over your ownership of your music, keeping a business mind, a lot key points made from the point of view of an artist that has been in the industry and made a impact linking up with one of the biggest artist of our generation NBA youngboy. Makonnen is an artist that wants to bring but artistry back in music and so do I. Interesting enough a couple months back I became a paid partner with NBA doggikrazy hes signed under NeverBrokeAgainLLC. So I’ll say great mind think alike they always do.
