We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ericka Page. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ericka below.
Alright, Ericka thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I had always had a love of music. I grew up listening to old R&B records my mom would play, like Donny Hathaway and Bebe & Cece Winans. I think I was hooked right away. I absolutely loved to sing, but I also learned to be pretty shy, so I didn’t really start performing until college and after. I got a degree in music production, and decided I was heading out to Los Angeles to really pursue things. I’ve been here since, continuing to explore music as well as other creative mediums.
Ericka, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, ha. I’m a composer, singer, filmmaker and author, but I think I like to safely say that I’m a creative, or storyteller. I kind of love a few different aspects of art, but it all sort of falls under storytelling, whether it be through song, motion picture or literature. The catalyst for moving to Los Angeles from small town Titusville, Florida was creating, singing and performing my original music compositions. I had met another artist when I was living in Orlando, Florida, and we really vibed musically. We started a collaborative project and went on a really incredible tour from Miami to Manhattan performing in clubs. We gigged LA and eventually started working on solo projects. Since then I’ve recorded an album, two EPs, holiday music, and just released a single and music video a couple months ago called “Girls Like Us”. I kind of do it all, from creating the music, to writing the lyrics and melodies, singing and recording the arrangements, and mixing and editing the tracks. As performers singing and acting really sort of go hand in hand. When we’re on stage singing, we are emoting and telling a story in a sort of similar manner to what you would do on screen. I had always done plays in school, and I think most singers or composers are interested in exploring film. Being in LA the acting world is omnipresent, so there were opportunities to explore, and my love of that side of the art grew. I studied acting and filmmaking, and began creating and directing music videos. In 2021 I signed with the best acting agents I’ve ever had, and I’ve been with them since.
When you’re out on the scene and you’re gigging you end up on the same stage with other bands and artists who are going on before or after you. You meet a lot of folks. Because I was someone who was capable with composing, recording and editing music I started to get people asking me to help them with their projects. I’ve audio engineered, composed, produced, written and recorded for a lot of different people and projects. That’s sort of how I’ve been able to (roughly) stay afloat out here, and more great projects are brewing. Please hit me up! I’d love to help you with yours!
Literature, funny enough, was not something I found a love of until somewhat later in life. I’ve always had a thing for sci fi, horror and fantasy, but avoided dense reading in substitute for play and socialization until my college years. Then I found writers like Peter S. Beagle, Toni Morrison and Susanna Clarke, and was greatly inspired. I began writing my book very slowly, only intending it to be a children’s read, but then it grew, and pretty soon I had a novel. A Marvel of Magic : Madden and the Dark Unicorns of Danuk was released in 2021 and is available in paperback and ebook at your favorite retailer.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I suppose sharing our stories, connecting, and getting and giving inspiration is why we make any art at all. One thing that was a bit of a hurdle for me was not understanding gender, and gender dysphoria at a younger age. I’ve known I was different for as long as I have memories, but I didn’t know about the incredibly alleviating, and freeing possibilities of treating gender dysphoria. I kind of went through life all the way into my thirties disconnected to my body, and living a sort of false life, because I didn’t have any positive examples of strong, beautiful, healthy transgender people. There is a lot of stigma around gender and sexuality and growing up in the small town south was not a very open minded place. It seems like such a ‘no big deal’ kind of thing to me now. I had an ailment. I got professional medical help. We addressed the problem, and I can’t tell you how good authenticity feels. Half life restored to one hundred. Feeling my best, and I think it’s pretty clear =)
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I think with this new social media world there can be benefits and drawbacks. I think the main thing you have to do is figure out what you’re really good at, or find a unique space that you can cultivate as your own. For me, I really just share the projects I am working on, some photography, acting headshots, and some leisure. I think my unique perspective of being involved in the artistic spaces that I am, coupled with living authentically in a time when people like me are being oppressed and looking for inspiration, brings the audience that I have, but I’m always looking for ways to share my art further.
