We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ericka List. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ericka below.
Ericka, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Oh yes! I love to take vacations and go somewhere I’ve never been. I enjoy photographing the sites and sharing my perspectives with others. It’s kind of like a photographic window of the world. As far as stepping away for awhile goes, it’s a great way to recharge and come back with a fresh perspective.
Ericka, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a military veteran, I was never stationed near my family. I started out photographing my children so my family could see them grow from afar. After awhile, photography became my means to alleviate stress and my creative outlet. In 2018 I was diagnosed with a serious illness. This was my turning point with photography. I looked at the pictures on my wall and I was in very few of them because I was always behind the camera. My photography is different because I want every single person who steps in front of my lens to feel seen. It’s extremely empowering to see yourself as you truly are and I want to capture that moment.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s when the client is in absolute awe of the photos we took. When we look in the mirror, we see our flaws, but the camera just sees the beauty of the moment. It’s then that we can realize we are more than our imperfections.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I get hateful comments and messages from people because I strongly believe all people should be able to live their unapologetic and most authentic lives. I will always support the LGBTQIA+ community, I don’t tolerate body shaming, and sometimes I’m passionate about a cause. I capture all of those topics in photography. Photography is a means of expressing my support.
