We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ericka Alexander a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ericka, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I would have started Priss & Posh Events sooner. I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I was afraid to take that step. My business started officially in the summer of 2020, but I dabbled in Event Decor years before actually making it official. At the time of starting my business I was already a mom of three boys and working in a local school system. I was ready to do something more, something I was passionate about. While I’m happy with where I am in my business now, had I started sooner and not allowed fear to halt me, I think I would have been a little further along in growing my business now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a boy mom, I love God and I love planning, creating, and decorating. I started in this business because I love to plan and decorate. While events are my passion and business, I dabble in some home decor as well. I was always planning and decorating for my kid’s parties and people would notice and say I was good at it. I agreed! I talked about it for a while, did my research then, I finally decided to go for it, and it was the best decision ever!
I am currently offering full event decor, tea parties, event coordination and some event planning services. When I think of the event business and what I do, I think I solve a few problems. #1 I save the host time and money (believe it or not) so they can enjoy their event. #2 I reduce stress by taking on the logistics of the event and keeping everything organized and moving smoothly. #3 I bring your vision to life. If you explain or show me your vision, I can create a beautiful event.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I aim to be completely authentic. My tagline is “feminine, girly, fun but I can create whatever you like.” What that means is I love to decorate with feminine colors, flowers, and everything girly because that’s what I love but….I am happy to create whatever your heart desires! As a boy mom, I didn’t get to create pink, pretty, girly events and I am a girly girl (ask anyone who knows me)! My business is a way for me to use that girly creativity.
I am most proud of the fact that I took this step to start my business and that I keep going no matter what obstacles I face. Sometimes it’s hard but I keep going no matter what it looks like.
I would like potential clients and followers to know that I love working with my clients on their events. I have a passion for helping and making things beautiful!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn in business was not pricing for my worth. I was doing events and either making a small profit or no profit at all. I was nervous about charging higher prices because I didn’t want to lose out on potential clients but, I knew I was putting in a lot of time and energy and it was draining at times.
I started to research the topic of pricing and found a lot of good information on pricing strategies as well as inspiration. I found what works for me and realized that every client will not be for me and my business, but those that are will be willing and happy to pay my prices and possibly be repeat clients!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best sources of new clients for me have been referrals from clients that have booked my services and family and friends. Another source has been attendees of events that I have done, and they liked my work. The last source has been social media. I do not have a very large following on social media, but clients still find me and book my services. I make it a point to ask my potential clients how they found me, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear some say they found me on social media.
