Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erica Murphy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
My business name, Erica L. Murphy Interiors, LLC., is inspired by my grandmother. We share the same initials, ELM. She named me after her daughter who passed away at birth. I recently lost my grandmother last year and I created my business before she passed. My brand is so much more than a business to me, there is significance and representation behind the name, it’s about creating a family legacy, as the name lives on.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my business from my love for interior design, decorating and creativity. I am a certified Interior Decorator, I started my company as an independent Interior Stylist. I specialize in virtual interior design, styling and consulting services. Initially, I wanted to offer services completely virtual, as a convenient way for clients who need assistance with decor ideas, a concept consultation, or a complete e-design of the space. I provide my virtual clients with customized mood boards, concepts, a shopping list of items to purchase and a custom DIY How to Guide. Earlier this year, I expanded my business by offering in-home decorating and design services. When clients hire me as their interior decorator, they work directly with me to transform the visual aesthetic of the space. As a Interior Decorator, it is my job to understand the look my clients want to achieve, and this includes selecting colors, furniture, fabric, rugs, wallpapers, and accessories to create an inspiring atmosphere. I am now accepting new clients, if you are interested in a In-home service, contact me via my website to schedule a clarity call to help identify and answer questions on what service works best for you.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had to learn to embrace the journey no matter where it takes me. When I started my business, I had a plan of what it would look like, how I would get there and where I would end up. But, my journey has been full of surprises. I had to learn to embrace change, roadblocks and pivots. Many of us are only looking at the destination or end goal instead of embracing the journey along the way. I could have given up back in college, when I got rejected from my architecture program, but I am happy I took the leap of faith to start my own thing, even though it wasn’t what I had planned. God’s plans are better and bigger than mine, and because of that, I am in rooms that are bigger than me, taking meetings with renowned architecture firms, and obtaining contracts to work on real estate development projects. I never could have planned, imagined or dreamed of this! My resilience and faith has kept me going. For anyone reading this, keep going, embrace the pace of your journey, have faith and trust it’s all working out for you.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal or mission driving my creative journey is to live out my gifts and purpose in what I am called to do, through my business. My passion to help people, and my passion for design, are the reasons why I created Erica L. Murphy Interiors. It is my belief that everything comes full circle. I started with just an idea on how I can express my creativity and show my work, I started with creating digital design mockups such as 2D e-designs of a space, concepts, and mood boards and have expanded my business to offering full service interior design decorating services for residential and commercial properties.
