Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erica Jones, MD. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
By ordering blank books for me to author, enrolling me in typing classes, driving me to speaking competitions and engagements while I was under ten years old, my mother, Margaret Jones, empowered me to find my voice and express myself with confidence. Raised by a village in Dothan, Alabama, my family has supported my creative journey throughout my life. I’m thankful for the foundation that they helped me build, and I make a valiant effort to continue to make my ancestors proud.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m most gracious for my tribe of supporters. Finishing four years of medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and three years of residency in Huntsville, AL would have been much more difficult without them. Practicing as a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician is a great privilege and responsibility that I do not take lightly, and I’m grateful that I’ve been able to help others take care of themselves for over ten years.
Dedicated to service, I am a co-founder of SoleCircle, a monthly mental health initiative with SolePlayATL that is designed to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in black and brown communities. I also host The Art of Transition Podcast which continuously highlights excellence in entrepreneurship for the past two years. Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
While in undergrad at Troy University, I realized that medical school applications were going to be extremely expensive. Knowing that I would be unable to rely solely on my parents for the money to purchase transcripts and send in application fees, I worked tirelessly as a Resident Assistant, Dorm Tutor, and Tutor for the Trojans Football Team. Saving the money that I earned from each of these jobs, I was able to successfully apply and interview at several medical schools– ultimately deciding to spend my four years at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Outside of training and knowledge, success is most closely tied to belief in self, ones ability to stretch their imagination as well as the capability to execute their ideas.
