We recently connected with Erica Griffin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
This question has a lot of different alleys to go down, but I’ll try my best to stay on the topic of Financial Literacy. The economic learning structure that public schools have is a weak one. Public school doesn’t fulfill the need to provide students the option of breaking barriers within the financial gaps of the society that they will soon be living in. It seems like public schools create worker bees and not innovative thinkers. As a black woman and a product of public school, financial literacy wasn’t there, and I have children in public schools, and it still isn’t there. Black and brown communities have a generational curse of not having the Financial knowledge to pass on to the next generation. They are teaching children to live a “Paycheck to Paycheck” mindset. Just live and pay the bills mentality. We can break the barriers of this issue by building a structured financial course from the time they are introduced to money till they graduate Highschool. They will be able to live a fulfilled life and be able to spend time with family and friends, and help build a better community. The career they choose will be able to be within reach and improve the minds of future leaders.
Erica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey everyone, my name is Erica Griffin; I’m a photographic artist and creative based in but not subject to Cincinnati, Ohio. Captivated Impressions is the name of my Photography studio; we specialize in Lifestyle Branding, Maternity, and Couples Photography. I’m flexible with natural light, studio light, and with ideas that my clients have. I’m a mother of 2 intelligent children, and I have 1 gray hair. The gray hair is just extra, lol. I’m an innovator, a go-getter, and a pursuer of knowledge. I love learning, reading, and being a self-reflector. I strive to be outside the box, and having an open mind helps me as a mother, artist, and black woman. I love creating; I had a big imagination growing up. I was drawn to the idea of being a creator in the media field; artistry runs in my family. I got into this industry in college. The fact that I can help people in capturing memories that will live forever is what caught my heart from taking photos to producing a documentary about the wrongful death of my best friend’s cousin, Porshia Brooks documentary is on YouTube called “The Aftermath of Porshia Brooks.” Although it was my very first Documentary, it will not be my last. I would love to work more on capturing weddings and filming meaningful documentary work.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My past clients and friends have been an excellent source for most of my new clientele. Word of mouth is the best ever, I have a cool and professional vibe that attracts new clients. Showing off my past clients on social media brings other people to me as well. I feel that its all in how you present your personality.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
A primary resource I wish I had was the new mentor I have now. Her name is Tomayia Colvin of Tomayia Colvin Education. She is fantastic, and her classes are full of so much information. Some part of me wishes I could go back and make our connection happen sooner, but another part of me feels I met her at the right time. Through her classes, I’ve met so many wonderful people that do Photography/Videography all over the United States. It’s so helpful and has pushed me to charge my worth in many ways. Changed my mindset for the better. I’m just so grateful for her and all my friends!
