Erica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
In the world of music as an independent artist is not an easy task. Earning a full time living from your craft is a labor of love and the reward is one of the greatest feelings you can have when you achieve your goals. Now there will be times that you question yourself and wonder if it’s worth it all because this journey comes with a lot of peaks and valleys. For example, I just released a new album independently and in the process we made a lot of rookie mistakes. Doing this without the help or budget of a label was sobering when the cost was factored in to record the music, photos for the cover artwork, paying the musicians, paying the Producer, paying the Engineer and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But, when you get to the other side of the mountain and you have the finished product in your hands it lets you know you can accomplish anything if you can do this. Now would I give it up and work a 9-5 ..not in a million years. God’s word says your gifts will make a way and it has proven true through out my life and career.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well I am born and raised in New Orleans, the youngest of seven, and in my home I was surrounded by all kinds of music, Gospel, Jazz, Pop and Rhythm & Blues. This is where I first fell in love with music. My Mother was an outstanding vocalist and classically trained pianist. She would practice and sing in our home with such conviction that it deterred me from singing and led me to the instruments of piano and violin up until high school. Now I always sang in church of course but other than that I was to shy, but as time went on and my destiny was charted, I was re-routed back to my vocal abilities. Taking the instrumental route though really helped to develop my musical ears and it was a plus for me once I really got more into singing. Now the funny thing is for every opportunity that came my way did so not by me searching for it, but was orchestrated by divine power. Even when I would decide I was gonna do something else, Music always came and got me. Working with so many musical greats all started with my phone ringing and a blessing and awesome opportunity on the other end. What i’m most proud of is how I am surrounded by a village of family and friends that have supported and encouraged me throughout my life and career. Also how i’ve grown as a writer/performer. This is not an overnight process and it takes some living in order to expound in this arena. What makes it even better is I know that there is so much more to learn and I’m grateful to be able to do so. I’m also really excited about my latest project “EMOTIONS” that I released on March 8, 2024 and how well it’s been received. It’s truly an honest, vulnerable peek into me, what I feel and what I have to say musically.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is seeing the audience connect with the stories you tell musically. Singing your lyrics back to you. Telling you at the end of a show or sending you a message in your Dm’s how much your songs helped them through a tough time, how it made them dance, or how it made them see things from another perspective. Universal truths can be related to no matter what you look like because we are all living the human experience.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best thing society and music lovers can do is buy tickets to shows, purchase the music, download and share with all you know. Also buy the artist’s merchandise and follow them on social media platforms and encourage your people to follow them as well.
