Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erica Dawn Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erica Dawn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Serving as a set designer, scenic artist, and prop master at Nashville Children’s Theatre has been one of my most rewarding artistic experiences. Collaborating with a talented team to produce professional productions for young audiences was truly fulfilling. Witnessing children’s reactions to the sets I helped create–hearing their gasps, giggles, and exclamations of joy brought profound meaning to my work. These moments are etched in my memory, reminding me of the impact art can have on young minds.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in a small town in Southern Indiana with a dream of building a meaningful career in the creative arts. After earning a degree in set design from Indiana University and a scenic painting certificate from Yale School of Drama, I embarked on an incredible journey that took me across the country. From Massachusetts and California to Nashville and eventually Texas in 2013, each stop along the way helped shape my artistic voice.
Throughout my career, I contributed to an array of projects in professional theatre, special events, live music, feature films, commercials, and television. I’ve painted everything from dance floors and furniture to signs, sculptures, backdrops, and even live animals! Some of my favorite projects have been designing the “note drop” for Nashville’s New Year’s Eve celebration, painting concert setups for acts like Jewel, Miranda Lambert, and My Morning Jacket, and working on television series like ABC’s “Nashville” and HBO’s “The Leftovers”. The dynamic challenges and fast-paced nature of this work were both thrilling and rewarding, fostering a strong work ethic and adventurous spirit.
Now, I live a more grounded lifestyle on our family ranch in Blanco, Texas and channel my creative energy into painting fine works on canvas. From my garden studio, I create endearing animal portraits and vibrant landscapes inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the Texas Hill Country. This chapter of my artistic journey allows me to merge my love of art, family, and nature into a fulfilling and deeply personal creative practice.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best way to support artists and a thriving creative ecosystem is to actively engage with their work. Buy art when you can, share and promote artists on social media, and attend art events. Even small acts—like liking, commenting, or offering words of encouragement—can make a huge difference in an artist’s journey. The creative path can feel uncertain and full of obstacles, but a supportive audience helps sustain and inspire artists. If more people prioritized bringing art and creativity into their daily lives, we’d cultivate a richer, more vibrant world for everyone.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to create work that supports my family, aligns with my values, and contributes to a greater purpose. In the long run, I ain to inspire change in the systems that threaten our environment and fundamental human rights. Knowing that my art had played a role in making the world a better place would bring deep meaning and fulfillment to my life. My hope is that, one day, I can look back and say that I truly made a difference.
