We were lucky to catch up with Erica D’Aurora recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I founded my music blog Musical Notes Global as a way to shine the spotlight on artists from all over the world. Growing up in an immigrant family in the United States, and before platforms like Spotify came into existence, I always found it hard to discover new music from the country I was so connected to and from other countries around the world. Feeling this frustration very deeply and for so long, I thought that there had to be other people who also wanted to know what was going on in the global music industry but were encountering similar frustration. And that’s why I decided to launch MNG. It’s a place where lovers of international music and fans of both established and upcoming artists from around the world can go to keep up to date on the incredible music that is coming out of all corners of the globe.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Starting Musical Notes Global was both one of the scariest and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. It was scary because it required me to put myself out there in a way I never had before, and it required me to put my writing on display for all to see (any writer out there who is also a perfectionist knows the struggle!) But it was one of the best things I’ve ever done because it gave me my start in the music industry. From the time I was a child, I always knew my place was in the music industry, but I didn’t know what that would look like. Once I started MNG and started meeting other people in the industry, like publicists, managers, etc., I discovered PR, and I immediately realized that I was definitely in the right place. Today I am both a blogger and a publicist and I am able to combine my two passions, music and writing, in one awesome career that I am so grateful for every day.
Between email pitching, crafting press releases and bios, writing is about 90 percent of what I do on a day-to-day basis, and it’s something that I am proud of because I have learned how to get to the heart of my clients’ work and convey what makes them special to press and potential fans. I always try to harness the core of an artist and the power of the emotion behind a song or album and turn that feeling into words.
I think what sets me apart from others is my pure passion for what I do. I always say that if you cut me open, you’d see the music running through my veins, and it is with that love and dedication that I approach each and every project I take on. I want each of my clients to feel as though they are my only client, and to know that I have given them my absolute best. I also grew up playing multiple instruments myself, so I am quite familiar with how a musician’s brain works!
When it comes to MNG, I take a similar approach when interviewing artists or sharing the news about their latest projects. I always try to come up with thoughtful questions that get to the heart of who they are and what makes their music unique, and I like to highlight those artists who are sharing positive messages, breaking barriers, and setting new trends with their work within the Anglo, Latin, and global markets.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Music is a vital part of our culture. It always has been. It accompanies us during our worst and best moments. It heals us. It has the power to change the world. My mission every day is to help the people creating it to be seen and heard and to help them spread their message in a way that will resonate with others. Without these brilliant minds, our world would be pretty quiet, wouldn’t it? They are the treasures who give us the soundtracks of our lives. It’s always been important to me to be able to support them, and to celebrate the value of music, in any way I can.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my passion and dedication to my work has helped me build my reputation. I always give 110% in everything I do. Both my job and my blog have been a huge, and very important, part of my life, and I don’t ever take it for granted. It’s been one of my greatest joys to work in the music industry, and I hope to continue doing it for decades to come.
