Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erica Case. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has done for me in music is my friend and producer James Joseph financially supporting the production of my record “Top Bitch” that was released in 2020. I was unable to afford paid and talented studio musicians but I needed a drummer and violinist so he graciously foot the bill to make that happen. I was able to complete my goal of making that record all because he helped so much. Being so lucky to have such a wonderful friend who would produce and financially support that album I was able to reach a larger audience, play more shows and tour. I am forever grateful and thankful to my friend and producer James for helping to start that musical progress and momentum for me. That record is a huge accomplishment in my eyes and I’m thankful to say we did it as a team together.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well firstly I’m Erica Case. I was born and raised in Franklin, TN south of Nashville AKA “music city.” My mother Tara was always a singer growing up and then both her parents/ my grandparents Floyd and Bessie Lanning were both touring musicians so I had a lot of influence and inspiration with music from childhood to adulthood. My grandmother taught me to play guitar at age 12 as my grandfather had passed away when I was only 18 months old. But I was taught of his musical history growing up. I took that learning into starting to write songs and recorded my first original songs in 2007 when I was 15 at an industry family friend’s home studio. I didn’t release my first EP until 2012. It was titled “GIMME SOME” and had small local success but didn’t reach a very large audience. I had a child 1 year after its release and took a break from making music. But I started a music themed podcast with my grandmother and retired musician Bessie Lanning in 2015 and then returned to creating music in 2017 after meeting my friend and producer James. We began creating my first full length record strongly titled “Top Bitch.” Because of how long it took to record, mix and master the album I didn’t release it until August of 2020. This started to open more industry doors for me and helped me make a lot more of a fan base than I had back in 2012 with my EP. I’m excited to be back in the studio now to release the 10th anniversary version of my EP “GIMME SOME” to all the new fans I’ve made since 2020 and start working on a new full length record for 2023. I really appreciate you guys at Canvas Rebel for taking the time to get to know a little more about me and my career in music.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a presence on social media in this over saturated artistic climate is extremely taxing. If you don’t have a PR manager or someone to help it’s pretty difficult. I definitely don’t have the number of followers on socials as other more well known artists in my circle but I can say that all of my followers are organically gained. What a lot of up and coming artists don’t know is many beginning artists in the industry purchase or are advised by their managers to purchase robot followers. Even though my numbers aren’t as high I’m proud to say at least I have a genuine and real fan base online of people who interact with my posts and genuinely enjoy my music and content. My best advice is to stay genuine in gaining an organic fan base because robot followers don’t equate to real fans at live shows or physical merch and record sales. My other advice is to instead of purchasing followers invest in advertising across social platforms and purchasing spots on Spotify playlists. Those things generate new and real fans.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my friend and music producer James Joseph back in 2012 shortly after my EP release. We just met at a live show I attended at The End, a live rock music venue here in town. He was playing bass for a band I wasn’t familiar with that night. He introduced himself by complimenting my mullet I had at the time as we had the same hairstyle and we just really hit it off. He told me about how he had his own home studio and was interested in recording new local artists and the rest is history. We’ve been close friends and music partners ever since. I plan to record my next full length with him as well.
