Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erica Ambrin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erica , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew that I wanted to pursue an artistic career path when I was about 13 years old. I realized that there was nothing else that made me feel more alive. Not only did it give me an outlet to express what I was going through, it also made other people happy. At the end of the day we all want to connect. This was a way for me to do that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a self taught musician, so that gives me a lot of freedom to be in control of my own creative experience. I have been singing since I was about five years old. I’ve been writing since I was about 11 years old. One of the first big things in my creative career came many years later. It may seem small to others, but getting a golden ticket from American Idol really solidified that I was doing the right thing. Although I did not make it very far in the competition, it gave me some much needed validation to continue on this path. I then went on to release my first EP entitled Suga. This also put me on a lot of people’s radar and I have been blessed with many paying gigs ever since.
In my music, I try to give perspective. I speak from my own experiences in order to tell my story. This has helped me not only to grow as an artist, but as a person as well. What I can provide to my listeners is vulnerability, truth, and perspective. People always say how good it makes them feel after one of my shows. Not only because we all love live music, but because they can connect to what it is I’m talking about. They see that it’s real.
I started a band called The Eclectic Soul Project. This is a collective of many musicians from all over that work with me in studio recordings, as well as live shows. They not only get to interpret the music from their point of view, they also get a chance to connect with other musicians. This has been a way to support one another, and I am very proud of what it has become.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think what society can do to support artists and creatives is simply do what they would do for famous people in the industry. The people they don’t personally know. Someone would pay thousands of dollars and go into debt to go to a Beyoncé concert, but wouldn’t even think about re-sharing a post, or showing up to a concert, or buying merch for someone they know. There are so many wonderful creatives out there who don’t have a huge platform. Showing love to the little guy can help us all flourish. It doesn’t take much in the age of social media. Even if you don’t have money or time, it takes nothing to share a post. It takes nothing to follow someone on streaming platforms. We need to stop living in La La Land. Focus on your communities.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to simply bring joy. To be a storyteller people can connect with. To leave the world a bit better when I leave it. The way I know how to do that is through art. At the end of the day if you wanna save the world, start with yourself. Energy is frequency.
