Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erica Adams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When my youngest son was 3 years old I decided it was time to take a calculated risk that I had been pondering for a few years. I left the comfort of working in an outpatient clinical setting amongst other physical, occupational and speech therapists to go out on my own and build my own brand. I did 6 months of research on the internet, reading books and following podcasts of others who had done it before me. I met with several friends and family members who were in the business field or who had their own practices within their trade and asked them many questions. I took all this info and began planning my business. It was scary. I felt like I was walking out onto a stage for all the world to see and I could either sore high and succeed or crash and fail. I put one foot in front of the other took it one day at a time, but was able to build my marketing and networking meetings and plans out which set the stage for my practice. On September 17th, 2019 I opened Blue Sky Wellness to the public. I started with a few patients per week and it very quickly grew to a full schedule. I am now 4 years in and have a 3 month waiting list. I’m SO glad I took the leap of faith. I wonder what my next risk will be!
Erica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I knew from a young age that I wanted to work in the health and wellness field, but did not declare my major until Junior year of college. I also had a strong interest in become a psychologist, but changed courses in college and decided I wanted to focus on helping peoples bodies (along with their minds). Fast forward through 4 years of college and 3 years of graduate school and I am a doctor of physical therapy who specializes in pelvic health. I treat men, women and children with bowel, bladder and pelvic health issues. I have been practicing for 16 years and have grown from a hospital based outpatient provider to an outpatient provider to now having my own practice for the last 4 years. Blue Sky Wellness is my business and I am so proud of how it has grown. I also use visceral manipulation (working with the organs) and craniosacral therapy (tapping into the brain and spinal cord rhythm) as main modalities with my patients. These techniques are exceptional at helping people heal their own body. I think of myself as the facilitator to help others bodies heal. I have a unique setting that is quiet, peaceful and always one on one with a very customized plan for each patient.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
In the physical therapy and medical world, you have to create a balance between caring for others and remembering to care for yourself. Most of your energy all day long is going out of your body toward improving others. Paying specific attention to your own body and what it needs. More sleep, a massage, workout, good healthy food, hydration, meditation.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, I had no idea at age 18 how much joy and prosperity this profession would bring me. I find it very rewarding to care for my patients and watch them heal.
