We were lucky to catch up with Eric Wong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Eric thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our goal is to establish a supportive community for local artists to showcase their talents in a professional setting without financial barriers. Through collaborative exhibitions where responsibilities are distributed, we aim to eliminate traditional exhibition costs. By seeking government grants and engaging in community initiatives, we further reduce the financial burden on artists, making art more accessible. Recognizing the risks artists face in producing and promoting their work, we strive to provide a platform for them to exhibit and connect without added financial pressures. Drawing inspiration from my artist friends, I saw an opportunity to innovate and improve the art industry.
Eric, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I myself am a mechanical engineer. I got into art through my friends, I have always marveled at their talents. I really enjoyed the shows they brought me to but over time, doing shows got much more difficult. This is when i decided that i could help artists by being a curator. As a community, they can access better galleries and reach a wider audience. Our company solves a lot of the artists struggles by removing risk from doing shows. We dont just find the right artists for the event, we create an event that is right for the participating artists.
I am most proud of the network I have built and for how far my shows have grown since I began. I never would have imagined combining a fashion show with an exhibition featuring films, poetry, music, and visual arts. This has been hugely influential for me as I have been able to cultivate collaborations between artists. I have witnessed great work being created and even had the chance of helping artists make their first sales
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being kind is key
In a market where talents are frequently preyed upon, it is important to be compassionate and supportive.
I find most of my new clients through referrals within my network. This would not be possible without the reputation I have built. Never oversell an opportunity, and always follow through with your word. I have made many new clients by doing favors for other artists and it always pays off.
Any advice for managing a team?
Organization
Like any business, it wont run efficiently unless its organized. This should be stressed for any self starter because you need organized data and instructions to implement plans and to analyze and improve. By showing great organization, it brings confidence to the team as well. Having a well documented plan greatly increases feedback and streamlines responsibilities. I recommend using apps like notion to help with load distribution and for real time data.
