We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eric Petersen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eric below.
Hi Eric, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I recently completed my first custom commission for one of my clients in the Chicago area. She’s an artist herself, and asked me to capture three locations around the city that were memorable to her and her husband as they celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary. It was a 6 month project, taking time and detail to find the perfect moment in these locations that she chose.
The project was one of my most fulfilling to date – her husband was surprised and loved the three photos that are now hanging in their family home.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a self taught photographer based in Chicago, IL who started taking photography more seriously over the past 5 years.
I’m now selling work in three galleries in the Chicago area, and am open to doing custom commissions for clients.
I often focus on street photography and cityscapes, capturing the unexpected moments happening around us every day. I aim to capture an element of motion in anything that I capture too.
I’m most proud of teaching myself this craft and becoming a professional, and was inspired by photographers like Peter McKinnon, Vivian Maier, and Ernst Haas.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Simple, buy art. Go to a local art gallery or art fest where artists are displaying and selling their work. The amount of hours and effort put into these beautiful works are well worth the investment. Choose this over anything else you’d decide to put up in your home. You’ll feel better, you’ll support the community, and you’ll have a memorable piece of art hanging in your home or apartment.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love the reactions and feelings that people convey when they see the photos I capture and create. I’m always so amazed and thrilled that my work can bring emotion and happiness to the people that see them.
What started as a creative outlet for me with no intention of making it a professional endeavor, it’s been so humbling that people would want to hang my art in their homes.
