Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eric Nelson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Eric thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
What we do as real estate agents has the capacity to make a life long impact on someone’s life, and I don’t think most people see it that way. Imagine, you’re bringing your significant other home to meet the parents, welcoming a new child into the world, or maybe a little less glamorous, starting a new, “remote” job. Now, where are all of these significant life events happening in your mind? Probably in the place you call home, right? Where someone chooses to put down roots is one of the biggest decisions one makes in life. My wife and I got into real estate nearly a decade ago with the desire to give our clients a winning experience and exceptional service when choosing where they would call home. This desire stemmed from the lack of care we experienced in the industry. We felt a calling to create a lasting and positive impression for our clients. Our focus has always been on building relationships rather than on transaction quantity. Our priority is to help as many people as we can to win in real estate, even if we are not acting as their agent. Our goal was never to have my face plastered on a billboard. If we are ever “counting” numbers, it’s the number of families we have been able to help along the way. We realize the impact every single transaction can have on the life of a client, and we hope to bring our clients the support they need in this journey. If I could give a healthy piece of advice to anyone entering the field, it would be that you will first need patience. Combine that with a strong work ethic and a good sphere of influence. Round it out with a healthy dose of integrity, and you have a winning combination. In the end, it’s about whether you see a client as a paycheck or as a person. Having your clients’ best interest in mind will help you offer your best and create a win-win scenario for every transaction.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is Eric Nelson and I am the principle agent of the Bayou City Team in Houston, Texas. Some might call me a nerd and I always have a dad joke handy… Do you want to hear a roof joke? It’s on the house!… In all seriousness though, real estate has become a passion of mine, and I entered into the industry with a desire to create intentional care and exceptional service, two qualities I had rarely experienced in my personal real estate journey. The Bayou City team is a full service real estate group, meaning we specialize in everything from residential, farm and ranch, and commercial real estate. We are a top producing team in Houston and we offer our services to first-time home buyers, real estate investors, and everyone in between. My background is in business management and mergers and acquisitions, but some say my best quality is my ability to help my clients find their perfect home and make the buying and selling experiences truly enjoyable! Although I am full of jokes, I realize real estate is not one. My goal has always been to find solutions that work best for my clients, no matter what step of the real estate journey they are on. I believe that my desire to see my clients succeed is what sets me apart from the competition. I am most proud of my two amazing kiddos, and I don’t take it lightly that I get to help other families find a place to call home.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I think most of us picture a comical episode of Friends when we hear the phrase “pivot!” In all honesty, sometimes leading a business feels a lot like trying to get a massive couch up a tiny staircase. Wether you relate more to Rachel, Ross, or Chandler, I think we can all agree there are certain, necessary “pivots” everyone has to make in business. One of such comes when your business has outgrown your singular capacity to maintain it in an orderly fashion. Personally, a recent pivot I had to make in my business was hiring a personal assistant. I realized that my time with my family was being eaten up more and more as business began to grow. Family comes first for me, and business, no matter how important, sometimes has to be delegated to the hands of another. I was at first trepidatious about handing over the reins, but pretty soon I realized how beneficial this decision had been. With the help of our newest team addition, my wife, kids and myself have had much more time to spend doing the things that matter most. If you’ve been here personally, I’m sure you know what a difference it can make. The solution for you may look different. But if running your business has started feeling like fighting to get a couch up a long flight of stairs, it might be time to consider a “pivot.”

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We have tried a plethora of marketing options over the years, but it seems that old school, tried and true methods works best. Snail mail, handwritten notes, and small touches like a gift card work wonders to foster brand loyalty. Everyone loves a good instagram reel, but it seems that our clients like the more classic, marketing touches. For example, our team sends out a monthly newsletter with real estate market info and seasonal tips. Nothing crazy in length, just a short note in their inbox every month reminding them that we are here for them if and when they need us. Brand loyalty is everything in real estate. When you give a client a great first experience, they typically become a client for life. It is an honor to see our clients achieve their real estate goals, and we make sure to let them know that! We love bringing fun gifts to the closing table, with personalized touches on each that show that they are not just a number to us. Besides that, one of the best way to keep in touch with our clients over time is simply picking up the phone and giving them a good, old fashioned phone call. It’s great to hear from them, and it lets them know that we are still there for them even after the transaction is over. We truly care for and want the very best for each client, and sometimes that’s best shown in a simple “How are you?”
