We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eric Michael Lichter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Eric Michael, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
Ok, first of all, I just LOVE this question! I’ve long believed that what we do here at Dirt Floor Recording Production is much different than what you’d find at a typical “recording studio”. It’s taken years to build a brand, and an identity, which artists have come to respect. This has spread, and keeps our schedule full at all times. As a producer and multi instrumentalist, I offer something to artists which is not typical in a recording studio. I help by adding whatever instruments and parts the music calls for. I also have an incredible team of recording and mastering engineers by my side, who also strive to maintain the reputation that we’ve built.
Eric Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Eric Michael Lichter, and I’m a music producer/multi-instrumentalist/recordist at Dirt Floor Recording & Production, in Connecticut. I got into this line of work quite by accident, as singer/songwriter in search of the perfect sound. I was unhappy with every single recording experience I’d had, even though the studios and engineers were all wonderful. In 2006 we decided to start Dirt Floor in earnest, and I began playing different instruments on the recordings, crude as they may have been at that time. As I improved, so did those recordings, and slowly the reputation grew. After a few years, we began to grain traction through articles in Tape Op, Modern Recording, and other high profile publications. We also did several radio interviews with NPR, and were involved with the Newport Folk Fest for a few years.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My personal goal has always been to see the possibility in every song, when working with artists. We want to make their recordings the very best that they can be, because the music will outlive them, and all of us! Most don’t think about the legacy aspect of it all, but we do.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with social media, yet must utilize it in some form every day. I’ve learned to post no more than once or twice per week on Instagram, except for the stories section, which I update a few times during each day. I will sometimes repost something from the past if I feel it could do better, in regards to its reach. I prefer Insta to TikTok and Facebook, though we do have a presence on both. Threads is also a new favorite, and fairly non invasive. My advice is really to find your tribe. Find the audience that will most closely relate to what you are putting out there.
