We were lucky to catch up with Eric Kenney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eric, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
A recent story really hits home with me. Many of the people I work with are performance focused. Placing higher up. Going faster, and being more competitive. But I enjoy workout with all types of athletes regardless of ability. This past year I group of friends I work with remotely became concerned about the health of one of their friends. he was over 300 lbs, working to much and with heart disease in the family it all came to ahead. With the support of his friends and training group he got consistent. with his training, starting eating better, sleeping better, etc. 6-18 months later he had lost 40 lbs. and was getting ready to ride a century with his 3 friends and trainig buddies. This story is really about community. with the support of this group who knows where he would be? having friends and training partners to support you, and keep you accountable can make all the difference!

Eric, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started Coaching athletes in 1999. i was an assistant varsity mens coach at a high school in Boston. One day the head coach came up to me telling how much confidence the boats I was working with began to have. I realized that I was actually good at this. I enjoyed it more than anything I had ever done. and I was getting paid. I had found Ikigai before I even knew what that was. since then I have started my own coaching business. I worth with individuals, teams and small groups in many different capacities. I am constantly trying to blend the science and art of making people faster and healthier.
I still work with some rowers from time to time but now, you will find me in the world of multisports and off-road sports. Triathlon, Xterra, road cycling, mountain biking and trail running. still learning, still finding new challenges and new ways to overcome them.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Years ago I applied for the CU head triathlon coach position. I was one of the last 3 people being selected. In the end the position was given to another very qualified coach. The next year, however, I started a program with a local club. starting a 10 mothing coaching program. This gave the club enormous value. the club grew. participation at races grew and athletes were having more fun, engaging more and more confident. “Fall down seven times, get up eight”
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
In my world the financial capital to start is small. but getting known, building a reputation and client base is hard. my starting capita. was time. I did all kinds of free work. seminars, clinics, free consultations, you name it. I remember saying to someone, “I don’t have money to get momentum going, have time and hard work. that’s it”
