We were lucky to catch up with ERIC KAYA recently and have shared our conversation below.
ERIC, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
We have invested in a company in its early stages. This company had a innovative technology in Hair Color and Hair Care industry.
To color hair you have to open cuticles of hair with a high pH formula (which also damages hair) and deposit color pigments into it. This formula is very toxic and also enters the body through the scalp. This technology was created by L’Oreal himself in the late 1800’s. It is used today by all well known hair color companies.
We at ONC NaturalColors hydrolyzed our ingredients and made them so small that we do not have to fry the hair with a high pH formula. We open cuticles of hair with a low pH formula and use body heat to soften the hair. In return the color formula is not absorbed by the body. The hair is not damaged and the pigments are infused into hair naturally. This makes a huge difference in the integrity of the hair. The difference is also visible even after one color application.
Our hair care is also made with hydrolyzed ingredients meaning that the molecules are small enough to penetrate into hair and feed it with vitamins, herbal extracts and essential oils. Therefore the ONC shampoo, conditioners and hair care products also penetrate into hair by just massaging it for a few minutes. Whereas most other formulas barely get into hair and easily wash off.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am actually a tech guy by profession. I have built and sold banking software to start with but then after selling my company I became and investor into businesses that nobody would look into. So when my sister who was born in the US came to me to invest into a healthy hair color and hair care business I immediately took an interest. The more I got into the technicality and the details of the trichology (science of hair) the more I was intrigued. I not only bought the technology but also built factories around it. I have always sold products that was unique and gave people a distinct advantage. When I found out that the hair color formulas used today was from a technology created from the latter part of the 1800’s, I knew I had found my niche. But because this business of coloring your hair and caring for it was very complex, I had to totally understand it. I then had to setup a customer service team that can answer the questions to customers had no idea of hair color and hair care really works. ONC technology is only a decade old.
Meanwhile my sister who was behind it all found out she had cancer one afternoon after having back aches. She died at UCLA 18 months later. She pleaded with me to look after the business and that the world needed a formula as such. So I did, like I promised. But it actually took me over 3 years to understand it all (well most of it).
The main difference with ONC formulas compared to all others is that they all use harsh chemicals to open cuticles and deposit color pigments into hair. ONC NaturalColors uses body heat or medium heat from a hair dryer. This makes a huge difference in the integrity and health of the hair. Also ONC formulas do not fry the hair whilst coloring it and it does not penetrate into the bloodstream. Therefore since it is not under the skin, it easily washes off skin with water without needing any barrier cream. ONC NaturalColors is not a health hazard. It does not irritate the scalp, break the hair and it prevents hair loss.
It was only after people started writing, calling and sending me videos thanking me to have brought in a product as such into the market that I thought, it was all worth it.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
The formula of our products with its nano technology to produce did not really exist anywhere or we did not know how to find them. So we went and found people who can create a factory that could produce to our specifications. The result from very early on was fantastic. Because we produced to the professional market as well as the retail market. We had salons using our product on a daily basis. We could easily identify issues with the production and modify anything that was not working right away. The factory was ours. The great thing about hair color and hair care was that you saw and felt the outcome within an hr max. With supplements, skincare or any fusion, cold pressed drinks you did not know what was going on once it entered the body.
Because we used mainly organic products sometimes we really had issues finding the raw material. Whereas lab made synthetic ingredients, used by others, were easily available for a fraction of the price.
Manufacturing our products cannot also be fully automated because most of the ingredients are harvested. And from season to season they can differ. Sometimes we would heat a combination of ingredients for 15 minutes before mixing it with another. And other times the time could double. Only people working in the production line could tell that from the density and saturation of each ingredient. This increases the cost of finished products. But when people call you or write to you to show you their appreciation and thank you for offering something that they have never experienced before..that’s when you realize it was all worth it.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We first started supplying to very upmarket salons in Beverly Hills. They were very hard to get into and difficult to even talk to. But once their elite customers started coming back and asking specifically for ONC products, that all changed. Some of those elite customers never touched the well known brands again. This really helped the brand. When we started manufacturing for the retail market. Some already new us from the professional market and the adaptation was very easy. The formulas were almost identical. We had immediate success.
