Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eric Clark. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eric , appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A few years back I came to place in my life where I knew I had to make a decision about music. Was I going to keep deep within my heart the fact that I had a gift to sing and perform and do nothing with it or bring the musical acoustic dream into reality?
Under my bed, I had a guitar that I just used to play around on occasionally. Then something just snapped. I knew that if I didn’t take the risk, I probably never would have the opportunity again.
So, I tuned up that guitar and went to the city market of downtown Savannah, Georgia just playing for whomever wanted to listen.
I stood there and people started putting money in my guitar case. I was clueless as to the fact of having a “tip jar.” I just wanted to play and sing. That’s it!
Once I got up the courage I began contacting local venues, hotels, restaurants asking, more like begging, them to let me play. Silence!
Of course, these spots already had regular live entertainment booked for months in advance.
One day a guy called me from a venue and informed me that a Friday night “spot” had opened up.
I took it.
It went amazing.
When he handed me a check, I thought it was a “thank you” card.
I couldn’t care less about the money, I was seeing that dream come to life!
This fueled my passion to hone my craft, practice and become “one” with my guitar. I practiced every day as much as I my fingers could take it!
4 years after that crossroads moment, I am utterly grateful to be a premier performer at Plant District LIVE, Night Life Hubs such as Myrtle and Rose, Hyatt Corp, and many incredible venues throughout the Southeast!
Eric , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Two words: Keep going.
Life is a business of “no’s”. However, there is a “yes” somewhere, if you don’t quit.
As far as branding I used the term “Eric Clark LIVE” and there’s a reason for it. I want people to get the “LIVE” part of what I do much more than a piped or boxed experience. Not to say, studio and production are not important by any means, but there’s nothing like taking what you do and being able to actually do that bare bones without any additional bells and whistles. This is where the creative juices started really coming together to paint a beautiful experience.
I love singing. I can’t stress enough the importance, at least for me, to be a person who when a client, fan, or follower is at my show they leave with such an experience that it becomes apart of their revolving conversation and memory.
Hone the craft until you reach the point of “distinction”. Anyone can simply repeat what they’ve seen or heard from other artists etc.
Creativity, for me, only came from the friction of practicing and working on skill set, not sitting back and thinking “I’ve arrived now.”
I am most proud of my color-wheel of music. I aim for any type of person covering such a broad spectrum of musical flavors that it’s simply “different” in a good way!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Oh it would have to be the feedback that most just keep swiping on. When someone says, “Hey I heard you play the riverwalk in downtown Savannah and I loved your set”. For me, what’s better than that?
You created a memory for them that lasted.
Creative avenues flow both directions. The gratification of what comes back knowing I gave that set, concert, or performance my everything is my reward!!!!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Well, I haven’t forked out the money (YET) for a big social push but that’s not to say I won’t. However, the big one for me is simple this: STOP OVERTHINKING EVERYTHING you post and if you love it, go for it.
Ultimately, you are who you are. Be you. Post that funny. Post that video. Post that creative art etc.
I’ve gotten more feedback from the stuff that I thought was “not worthy” of the post than the social media posts that were just filled with what I thought was relevance.
