Eric, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump into the story of starting your own firm – what should we know?
When I decided to start my own firm, Nathans Investigations, it was really the culmination of years of experience in the field and a desire to provide investigative services with a level of professionalism and integrity I felt was often missing. The early days were both exciting and daunting.
The first step was defining the firm’s niche and vision—deciding which types of investigations we would focus on and the level of service we wanted to provide. From there, I had to tackle the practical aspects: obtaining the proper licensing in Florida, setting up the business entity, securing insurance, and establishing the legal and operational frameworks necessary to run a professional investigation firm.
Finding suitable office space and acquiring the right technology and tools were additional challenges. For a small start-up, every dollar counts, so I had to be strategic about where to invest and where to be resourceful. Building a client base from scratch was perhaps the biggest challenge. Trust is everything in this business, so it was crucial to network, maintain high ethical standards, and let word-of-mouth referrals grow our reputation.
If I could do anything differently, I would have invested even more time in marketing and building partnerships early on. While the work speaks for itself, consistently and professionally getting the word out from the beginning could have accelerated growth.
For young professionals considering starting their own firm, my advice is this: be patient, be thorough, and prioritize integrity above all else. The early days will be tough, and mistakes will happen, but if you focus on building credibility and providing real value, your reputation will grow, and the business will follow. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of having a solid support network—mentors, peers, and trusted advisors are invaluable.
