We recently connected with Erene Olson and have shared our conversation below.
Erene, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I don’t remember a time where I wasn’t singing. My parents say I started around 2 but I made my decision to take it seriously at 4.
If I knew back then what I know now, I’d tell myself to just go and record. And that you don’t have to wait until you’re out of high school to start your career.
I think one of the most important skills is learning how to connect with your audience during a performance. I learned that at church from a woman who could out sing anyone on the charts today. Aside from that, make sure you give the audience a reason to want to come back. Make it enjoyable for them.
I think the obstacle that stood in my way of learning more were the limitations I put on myself. I thought I had to wait on someone else to make my career for me, but almost 2 decades later I’ve learned that 99% of what you do will have to be done by you.
Erene, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
One thing people should know about me is that I have so many different sides to me and my music showcases all of them. My interests are eclectic and so is my music. My playlist can go from Taylor Swift to the Clark Sisters to Carmina Burana to BTS. These all influence my signature sound in different ways. I’m also heavily influenced by the time of year, I definitely write with the seasons. More fast paced songs for the summer and more acoustic towards the winter time.
I got interested in music before I could even spell my name. It wasn’t ever an option to not pursue it. And what my fans can expect from me is to always get a look from the behind the scenes of my life which can be pretty fun at times. Some people say I’m quirky (although I don’t see it) and funny, so my music and videos on Youtube pretty much reflect who I am. If you mix fashion, class, humor, and a nonchalant attitude, you’d get me,Erene.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Like the Pokémon theme song, I want to be the best. But I’m not a perfectionist in the way of never being satisfied. I’m always satisfied with giving my own personal best which can look different everyday. With that being said, I know my abilities and I know that there’s no reason why I can’t achieve that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to hone your craft and seeing that progress. Singing came naturally to me so there were times I was worried I had reached my potential but I’ve been continuing to grow and get so much better at it everyday. And that progress, even in the smallest ways is my favorite part because I have no expectation for it. You can train all day, but at some point your voice is just your voice but over the years, mine has grown richer and continues to do so.
