Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erena DiGonis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Erena, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Over the past 15 years, my professional journey has taken me from solo private practice to leading a group dedicated to addressing anxiety, stress, and trauma. I’m genuinely passionate about our work and the incredible team of clinicians alongside me, as well as the people we have the privilege of serving.
About three years ago, a pivotal moment led me to explore providing continuing education. It was a decision born out of a desire to escape the monotony and detachment that can sometimes seep into our field. I vividly recall attending a training and asking myself, “Have you ever tried this with someone acutely traumatized and emotionally dysregulated?” It dawned on me that the essence of our work resides in the messy and real-world challenges.
This realization sparked a yearning for conversations that went beyond the routine—a desire for discussions that not only ignited enthusiasm but also fostered a sense of community. I wanted a space where like-minded therapists could come together, share experiences, and find solace.
As therapists, we navigate a path that can be both rewarding and isolating. The solitude that often accompanies our work goes beyond words, and I intimately understand the unique challenges we face. My decision to delve into continuing education wasn’t just about professional growth; it was a commitment to building a community where the heart of our work—those raw, real-world challenges—could be openly embraced.
In our shared journey, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of connection, understanding, and a space where our collective experiences are not just acknowledged but celebrated. This venture has been a testament to the power of collaboration and the strength we find in supporting one another as we navigate the intricacies of our profession.
In taking this leap into being a continuing education provider, there was an element of fearlessness in trying something new and different. It was a commitment to break away from the familiar and embrace innovative approaches. This fearlessness, I believe, is essential in our field—a recognition that growth often comes from stepping into uncharted territories.
Erena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My personal story is that I’m a first-generation Greek American, and I take pride in being the first on my father’s side to not only graduate from high school but also go to graduate school. The journey wasn’t without its share of challenges, each serving as a valuable lesson in resilience and the importance of digging deep.
One of the most defining moments in my life occurred when I was just 12 years old. That’s when my sister entered the world with multiple life-threatening medical conditions. At that tender age, I may not have fully grasped the profound shift in consciousness that ensued, but it laid the foundation for a unique perspective. Growing up, I became acutely aware that illness and the fragility of life aren’t confined to a certain age bracket. I saw firsthand the emotional needs of families grappling with fear, pain, and uncertainty.
This early exposure didn’t make me shy away; instead, it taught me to lean into these challenges. I learned not to fear looking into the eyes of vulnerability or extending a hand and heart to those in need. My sister became my greatest teacher and inspiration.
Fast forward to today, all of these experiences have led me to a place where I offer therapy services at my group practice and provide nationwide continuing education for mental health professionals. What sets me apart isn’t just the services I offer, but the authentic ability to connect on a human level, to understand the intricacies of emotions that accompany our shared human experience. My work isn’t just a service; it’s a genuine commitment to understanding, empathy, and making a positive impact.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Without a doubt, I would choose the same profession and specialty all over again. The path I’ve taken has not only been fulfilling but has also shaped me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. The challenges and triumphs, the connections made with clients and colleagues, and the continuous learning have enriched my life profoundly.
Every step, every hurdle, and every success has contributed to my growth both professionally and personally. If there’s one thing I would change, it would have been to specialize sooner.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been maintaining consistent communication and follow-up. Putting oneself out there can be challenging (and scary), but I’ve found that establishing and nurturing connections through clear communication builds trust with potential clients. It’s about more than just offering a service; it’s about creating a supportive and reliable presence that resonates with people.
