We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erbriyon Barrett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Erbriyon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project to me I felt like I ever worked on was a mural I did in Greenville,SC behind this store called hyped experience in that community murals with a different style aren’t pushed that heavy there and I was glad to do a mural on such a huge wall to finally bring that new look of art into the art community there
Erbriyon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been doing art since five but really pushing it out for 5 years now I feel like I’m starting to see the real direction I wanna be at in the next 10 years with it I see the type of bigger artist who I wanna be like that inspire me I feel like I’m finally growing that strong foundation for myself. Doing abstract art and pop art isn’t seen to be true traditional black art it’s like a black person choosing to do pop music instead of rapping I wanna be seen as a black artist but not a black artist if that makes sense even now I’ve gotten deeper into my photography I mostly shoot on film also I’ve even designed things from hats and clothes which I can see myself doing more down the line I wanna be a real versatile creative hitting all areas of creativity
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I honestly I don’t know what a NFT is bro -Tyler the Creator
(I really do but know what it is but that’s how I feel on it if you’ve seen that interview with Tyler)
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I come from a military city not much known people are from there unless it was from the 50s with music with black artist I kinda wanna be apart of that not putting a lot of pressure on me or anything but I truly think that sometimes drive me a lot in what I do I don’t think on it much but that motivates me at times and I think I just wanna make it in my circle of people nothing crazy big but just inspiration for others before me like now I see visual artist getting Jordan deals and stuff like that excites me how you can be a non athlete and still get recognized off your art in a big way like that I honestly want my stuff in Japan London Soho but at the end of the day that falls on me but it’s one day at a time nothing isn’t all done in one day
