We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Enrique Ferrer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Enrique below.
Enrique, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The latest and most meaningful project I have worked on would be the mixing and mastering work I did for the local Miami pop/rock singer and songwriter Michi Sanz and her music project. I was introduced to her by her music producer because they wanted someone to mix and master their new music that came with a music genre change, in this case to pop/rock. They were looking for someone to give it that 90’s pop/rock sound with distorted guitars, punchy drums, and in-your-face vocals, which I personally love, and was able to replicate! It started with one song, then a couple more, then that became a full EP/album and now we are working on a second album! The best part is, we were able to postulate it for the Latin GRAMMY Awards last year!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a sound engineer and drummer with over 18 years of experience in the field. I started with a home studio in my home country of Venezuela, and now I am based in Miami, providing mixing and mastering services for artists, bands, singers, songwriters, labels and music projects around the city. I got into this business as a musician first, recording an album in a professional studio and that really caught me… When I heard my first song fully mixed and mastered, I knew from that moment I had to do that for a living. Fast forward, I got my Undergraduate degree and then enrolled into Middle Tennessee State University where I got my Master of Fine Arts in Recording Arts and Technologies in 2016. In the present moment I specialize in mixing and mastering songs, EP’s and full length albums for mostly alternative music acts. I really love rock, pop, reggae, metal, electronic music and all the cool stuff! I also do live sound for bands and corporate events, mix for live streams, and record full concerts in digital multi-track formats so they can be mixed later on and perhaps edited with videos. I believe what sets me apart from others, is my attention to detail and listening to the client’s needs. At the end of the day, I do not own the music, the client does, and I must satisfy the client’s need and the sound they are looking for.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
New clients always come from word-of-mouth in this business. But the reality is that your name and contact information will only be shared to the next client if you did a good job with the previous one. You get one chance, and you do not want to waste it. Successful projects typically bring other projects. And believe it or not, the music scene in Miami is actually small, we all know each other, so you must keep your reputation at good standing all the time.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want my clients to feel the way I felt the first time I heard my first song fully mixed and mastered. I remember I had a band, and we had played quite a bit around the city, but we had never recorded anything. By the time we decided to go to the studio, we were kinda tired of the band thing, but whatever, we went in with no expectations and recorded the song. Once we heard the final product, the joy we felt in our hearts was impossible to describe, it was like an instant boost of confidence within the band. It was so good that we decided to keep the band, toured around the country, kept writing new songs, and ended up actually recording a full-length album! Imagine that! We were thinking about stopping the band, but when we heard the song, tables turned, and we took the band to the next level! I want my clients to feel that confidence to keep pushing in their music journey, and that is what drives me every day.
