Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to EnJunaya Canton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
EnJunaya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I have always been a risk taker.
The biggest risk I took was moving to Los Angeles and shortly thereafter quitting my 6 figure job to start my business. I survived by working part time at Sephora to help me learn about skin care products. I would literally survive off the sales from my online store (at that time) and the minimum wage from Sephora (where I did not have regular hours).
Though a very terrifying experience, it was extremely important for me to develop my faith, to learn how to manage on a very small business and to see myself hustle and remain focused to grow my business in not just what it is now, but the future it has.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is EnJunaya Canton. I began using my background in Chemistry to formulate and manufacture BioActive, Vegan, Organic and Non-Toxic Skin and Hair Care Solutions in 2007 when I found myself very overweight and with a host of medical problems, including 18 large fibroids.
In researching possible causes I learned that 9 known toxic chemicals used in cosmetics products, negatively impact black women’s health more than other races. Armed with this information, I was determined to do the right thing and formulate non-toxic skin and hair care solutions for women, men, teens and babies that would not harm them.
As a Black and Female Owned Green Beauty brand we are also a leader in the sustainability and aiding others to join us in reducing climate change and protecting our environment by only using reusable, recyclable and compostable packaging for single use orders and for our zero waste bulk and refill programs.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
When speaking with a good friend who helps others with social media content, she shared with me that she loved my IG content, but thought I should stress more my Scientific background. We thought about various ways to do that and one of which is to wear my lab coat and under it with garments that I would normally wear, which are not necessarily things people who you think have a Chemistry background would wear.
Some of the reels I do with the lab coat are very serious and raise awareness of toxic ingredients and packaging and also about meetings I have via zoom with clients about various questions.
I still fee a bit out of place doing it, but I know it has helped me with a wider reach of followers and with conversion. Sometimes you need someone who knows you to help pull things out of you for your business to thrive more and I would say just do it!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I am grateful that my company was able to not only survive, but thrive during Covid. It was a very stressful time for everyone.
I turned into a 1 person operation for two years and it was very challenging. I stayed up numerous nights almost all night not only manufacturing, but fulfilling orders in a much smaller space for two years. It was exhausting to say the least. I was so grateful that clients were continuing to purchase that I could not let them down and let my exhaustion take over me.
It is because I spent so many years prior doing everything as the Founder, I was able to draw on that tenacity to survive through COVID.
