We were lucky to catch up with Enjoli Gavin-Rudd recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Enjoli thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Well I’ve always been creative, and it has been my goal as a career. If I could go back in time, I think I’d still start my balloon styling career when I did. I began my journey into balloon styling after the birth of my son, transitioning from a career in theater. Motherhood sparked a new passion for creating joy through balloon decor.
Before starting BalloonistaKC, I was deeply immersed in acting, but the demands of the theater world didn’t mesh well with my new role as a mom. Shifting to balloon styling allowed me to balance my creative side with my personal life, offering a way to bring happiness and beauty to others while being there for my family.
Starting sooner might have meant missing out on valuable experiences in theater that have shaped my artistry and attention to detail, and work ethic. Starting later, on the other hand, could have delayed the joy and fulfillment I find in creating balloon art. Every event I’ve decorated and every smile I’ve seen has reinforced that I started at just the right time.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. My journey has been uniquely mine, blending the skills and passions from my past with my current business. It’s been a whirlwind of creativity and joy, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
Enjoli, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey everyone! I’m Enjoli (on-joe-lee), also known as BalloonistaKC, your go-to balloon stylist in Kansas City. As a Missouri-born, black woman-owned small business, I’m proud to be part of our vibrant community. My journey into balloon styling began after the birth of my son, marking a transition from a vibrant career in theater to the creative world of balloon decor. With a BFA in Theater, I’ve always been passionate about bringing joy into people’s lives. Motherhood ignited a new passion in me, and I found balloon art to be my new source of creativity.
At BalloonistaKC, I specialize in organic balloon installations, creating stunning decorations for weddings, baby showers, birthday parties, and corporate events. I also offer other balloon offerings such as beautiful balloon columns, bouquets, arches, and so much more to add that extra dash of visual feast to any occasion. My goal is to bring a high-end polish and unique touch to each event, ensuring that every celebration is unforgettable.
What sets me apart is my background in theater, which has equipped me with a multitude of skills, creativity, and a flair for the dramatic. I understand the importance of creating a visually captivating experience, and I pour my heart into every install to make sure it resonates with my clients and their guests.
One of the problems I solve for my clients is taking the stress out of event decoration. Planning an event can be overwhelming, but with my expertise, I ensure that the decor is not only beautiful but also seamlessly integrated into the overall theme and atmosphere. My clients can relax and enjoy their special moments, knowing that the visual aspect is in professional hands.
I’m most proud of the joy and excitement I bring to people’s lives through my work. Seeing the smiles and hearing the compliments from guests at events I’ve decorated is incredibly rewarding. It reaffirms my passion and dedication to this craft.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that BalloonistaKC is all about creativity, professionalism, and a personal touch. I’m here to transform your events into magical experiences, adding that extra sparkle and flair that will leave a lasting impression. Ready to make your event unforgettable? Let’s chat!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One thing non-creatives might struggle to understand about my journey as a creative is the emotional, mental, and physical investment involved in my work. Creating balloon installations isn’t just about blowing up balloons and putting them up somewhere, and we’re done in 30 minutes; it’s about envisioning a dream, pouring into every design, and bringing magic to people’s lives.
Hours and hours go into researching colors, shopping around for the best prices for balloons (sometimes having to order from multiple distributors), and staying up late to blow up balloons. Depending on the size of the install, it can take up to 6 or 7 hours just to prep the balloons alone. Then there’s the logistics of putting them up in a space we may have never stepped foot in before. Some venues can’t have anything attached to the walls, so we have to put on our engineering hats and get creative with how we secure everything.
The physical toll is often underestimated. Balloon styling requires hours of standing, bending, and lifting, which can take a toll on the body. It’s a physically demanding craft that requires strength, stamina, and attention to detail.
Despite the challenges, the fulfillment of seeing my creations come to life and the joy they bring to others make it all worthwhile. It’s a labor of love that combines creativity, dedication, and a touch of magic.
For anyone considering a creative path, be prepared for demands. Embrace the challenges, take care of yourself, and remember that your passion and dedication will shine through in your work.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As balloon stylists, we always need to be prepared to adjust on the fly. So many factors can come into play, with weather being one of the biggest challenges. Ask any balloonista, and they will tell you that adapting to weather conditions can test even the most experienced professionals. Heat and wind are the main culprits, with direct sunlight posing a risk of balloons sticking together and oxidizing, and high temperatures can cause them to pop. Additionally, if your structure (like a pipe and drape, circle arch, sailboards, etc.) isn’t properly weighted, your balloons can end up gone with the wind, and not fabulous.
Transitioning from theater to balloon styling was a significant pivot for me, especially considering the weather and time constraints involved. It required me to acquire a whole new set of skills, understand the market, and build a business from the ground up. It wasn’t just about blowing up balloons; it was about mastering the craft of creating stunning installations that elevate people’s events to the next level.
