Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to EnJanae’ Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
EnJanae’, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I went to LSU to study fashion merchandising. It was my first major and for me, it was a no-brainer. I have loved fashion and wanted to work in the fashion industry for as long as I could remember. During my second semester, I took a general education class called introduction to mass media. It covered a little bit of everything that would be taught in the Manship School of Mass Communication, and after a few classes, I knew I wanted to pursue writing as well. I have always enjoyed writing but never thought about combining it with my love of fashion until then. I soon after applied to the Manship School of Mass Communication and got in. Then I spent a lot of time working on learning AP style and grammar. It was definitely a learning curve but it was well worth it. I began writing and working for LSU’s award-winning newspaper The Reveille during my sophomore year. I ended up working there for over three years and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. I was a writer, editor and manager over the years and it helped me land internships and later professional writing jobs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
At The Reveille I wrote for the entertainment section, then became the entertainment editor. I soon learned that I was in love with entertainment more than I had ever imagined and I could talk about it as a job. I later became the managing editor of the newspaper. During that time I also interned in New York and began my freelance writing career. I have been lucky enough to write for Baldwin on Medium, Basic Magazine, College Fashionista and more. During my senior year, I was the editorial intern for College Fashionista. I also began creating content on social media, working with brands like Princess Polly and Parade. I love being able to take my love of all things fashion and entertainment and share it with people who read my work and watch my content. My knowledge and take on pop culture make my work unique and it’s what I’m the most passionate about.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I definitely wish I knew more about how to pitch as a freelance writer early on. One of my mentors James R. Sanders, who I interned with during summer 2021, really helped me learn how to not only write good pitches but also how to find where to send them. There’s such a large community of freelance writers on Twitter and LinkedIn that help one another. Editors send out calls for pitches themselves and writers can help other writers. It’s definitely helpful to be a part of.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a writer and content creator is getting to interact with people who love the same things I do. I enjoy writing and making content because it helps me connect with people who have similar interests. As a huge fangirl, nothing makes me happier than talking about my favorite shows, movies, albums and more with other fans.
