We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Endrea Kosven a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Endrea, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
As a small business, our goal is to help place a company in the hearts and minds of others. Whether that’s through copywriting or a website, we strive to do this through creativity and being inspired by what’s around us. Due to our size, we’re able to be flexible and creative with how we approach our marketing for both individuals and clients. Our company slogan says it all — It’s where creative lives.
This makes a difference, and has helped our clients receive recognition, whether through content we’ve written or a website we’ve designed for them.
Endrea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been running my own agency since 2009. After working as a junior publicist with the Los Angeles Dodgers, I started working at leading worldwide PR firm Edelman Public Relations, working on major accounts such as ABSOLUT Vodka, Nissan North America, and DreamWorks SKG. I then began working at several corporate sales jobs, including a five year stint with a large uniform company.
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial bent, since my father and grandfather had run a successful auto repair and wholesale parts business in Los Angeles, so I always felt that eventually I would have my own business. Also having a strong creative side inherited from my mother, I had felt confined by the limitations of working in the corporate environment, so after working at the uniform company, I decided one day to quit and start my own shop!
I launched EDK on wing and a prayer. I had NO financial backing getting started – I did this completely from scratch. I began seeking freelance gigs, and my business took off. The idea of having a business where I could create jobs for others and be a self-starter was really invigorating and motivating for me. Why wouldn’t I want to do something where I could actually make a bigger difference in this world, rather than toil in a corporate job that provided no real opportunities for any growth or impact?
One thing I would say is keep an open mind when starting your business. You may find that a skillset you didn’t think you had actually begins to show up and make a real difference for your company’s growth, or an obstacle you come across may actually be an opportunity in disguise.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think a combination of dedication to the work and wanting to always stay focused on providing the best quality for our clients. In addition, I think wanting to be unique, be outside the box, and have fresh ideas for our clients has kept our reputation very strong and consistent, as we always have return clients come back to us for new marketing projects.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
We have a combination of sources for new clients — we work a lot on our online strategy through social media and email marketing, but that is something we focus on for the long-term. We do have a lot of happy clients, so we’ve have received word of mouth referrals for our work as well!
