Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Enchanted Photography. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Enchanted, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
For starters, Covid took us by surprise, as it did for everyone. We were in the midst of our first Spring as a photography team, and were excited to see where Spring would take us. When we were all able to come out of stay at home orders, that’s when we discovered our High School Senior Specialty. So that was a blessing in disguise and helped to hone in on our specialty. Also, in the midst of building our photography business further, we decided that we wanted to move our family to live in Colorado. We’re still working on building a client base and our portfolio to reflect the gorgeous areas of Colorado. It was scary – to leave the comfort of what we had built in Texas. But we trust our process and we’re gradually building a beautiful portfolio and have met some wonderful people to start growing our clientele.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We’re Reggie and Nicole, a husband and wife photography team. We’ve been married for seven years and started Enchanted Photography in 2019. Reggie had been taking pictures of our children for a while when Nicole pushed us into taking photos for others. She saw something in the photos we were taking that she thought we could share with others. Capturing memories for others has been special. We’ve enjoyed meeting our clients and getting to know them, not only as clients but on a personal level. At the beginning, we thought taking photos would be point, shoot, and move on to the next pose. It turns out that we are very interested in getting to know the person(s) we are shooting. It all just came out organically. It’s just who we are.
We are interested in people and their stories. There are some clients who we’ve sat for 10-20 and sometimes 30 minutes after the shoot talking about their kids, jobs, vacations, etc. It’s one of our favorite parts of being photographers. Nicole had a creative side hustle along with working full-time as a nanny before Enchanted Photography. She has a very creative spirit and has always wanted to do something in the creative field. She saw photography as an opportunity for us to not only work together but for her to fill that need to be creative. Reggie and Nicole work full time, but we hope to scale enough in the next few years to allow us to focus on Enchanted Photography only. We found something we love doing and we really enjoy doing it together. We want to do this for the rest of our lives.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Authenticity. 100 percent. It’s the only way we know how to be. Just by being ourselves, our clients can relax and be themselves as well. When the clients are relaxed, the pictures just come out better than if they were stiff and trying too hard. We’ve had clients tell us about nightmare sessions they’ve had where the photographer is demanding and asking them to do a certain pose they don’t feel comfortable with. We’re more laid back and go with what the session is feeling like. If the client has young children and aren’t cooperating, then we capture some more candid moments. We don’t have to wait for the ‘perfect’ picture. Sometimes the perfect picture is the candid one. We just had a session where a toddler was not cooperating, but we kept shooting as the parents tried to soothe the child and get him to cooperate. Some of those pictures came out so beautiful. We impressed the clients so much because we were able to capture their family dynamic naturally, in candid photos. It was not a conscious decision to be this way and make this effort. Photography is something we love to do, so when we’re out shooting a session, it’s fun for us. And our clients sort of feed off of our vibes, if you will. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve ended a session and the clients remark on how fun that was. We enjoy the entire process, from meeting people to the finished, edited photos.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We strive to get to a point where we can do this full time. As of now, we both work full time jobs that have nothing to do with photography or being a creative. Both of us look forward to the weekends when we do our sessions. As much as we would love to just up and quit our jobs to pursue photography, having kids makes that an irresponsible decision. Who wouldn’t love being your own boss? We both love having a creative outlet and the ability to explore new areas on our own time. Building this business from the ground up gives us great pride and the freedom to make this venture our very own.
