We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emzy King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emzy below.
Emzy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
I sometimes have to remind myself that I make my living hanging out and drinking with strangers while showing them around my hometown. A gig so cool that when I describe it to people I run into on tour with guests the reaction I often get is incredulity.
The simple answer is to not be annoying and to be present. Having OCD and having been a tour guide for years on the barges on the riverwalk I was well versed in general San Antonio history but in all honesty it was my few frustrating years I spent leading Segway tours with small groups that I really honed the interpersonal and storytelling skills required to be able to handle hours hosting and drinking without being annoying or overbearing.
Emzy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A San Antonio native I have been researching and guiding guests through my hometown for twenty plus years. Despite my experience or perhaps because of it, I strive to less of a “tour guide” and more of just a genuine guy with a passion who you would would want to have a drink (or 4) with. I will not greet you in a period piece costume carrying a “ghost meter” or a PA. I cannot promise you a ghostly experience. I am just a guy and I dress accordingly. What I can promise you is authenticity and that I will be well prepared to prove the validity of the stories that I tell.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The proliferation of franchises and the heavy toll that Covid has taken on hospitality and food/beverage has only reinforced my primary mission of supporting locally owned and historic bars and restaurants in downtown San Antonio.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The complete and utter freedom to say and present the history the way I want, especially these days.
