We recently connected with Emory Brock and have shared our conversation below.
Emory, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I fully believe the best way to become successful is to work hard. Being a salon owner and hairstylist is so much more than just working behind the chair. My job does not stop when I go home. I strive to make sure my clients get what they are wanting their hair to look like, starting with a consultation before they step foot into the salon. I enjoy doing this to make sure I’m very prepared to make them feel beautiful. When I first started behind the chair, I had barely any clients but I knew no matter what, I wanted to work hard and make myself proud of my work.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a full time salon owner of Essence Salon and Spa in Bethel, Ohio, and hairstylist. I specialize in blonding and extensions, but I also love dimensional brunettes, beautiful coppers, and fun vivids! Providing hair extensions is such a fulfilling appointment because I just love seeing my clients fall in love with their hair again and gaining that extra confidence. I run an independent salon, full of wonderful ladies in the beauty industry. Essence Salon and Spa is your one stop shop for all kinds of different beauty services including nails, waxing, hair, and more! All of the girls that work at my salon are younger and keep up with the current day trends. Working in the beauty industry is a difficult, but extremely fulfilling career. Nothing is better than seeing your clients leave with a huge smile on their face.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
All throughout high school I had always planned on going to college for business. Very quickly into my freshman year of college, I knew it was not right for me. I was terrified to drop out, especially since I was the only member of my family that wouldn’t have a college degree. A good friend of mine convinced me to try out cosmetology and I started there two weeks later. I have LOVED the beauty industry ever since!! I originally went to college with the dream of owning a business and now I own my salon, so I took a different path but I still accomplished my dream. I love talking ti my younger clients that are considering cosmetology school and telling them my experience.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
SOCIAL MEDIA & WORD OF MOUTH!! I can’t stress enough how beneficial social media is for growing your clientele. Amazing before and after pictures will really show the public your skills. Majority of my clients find me on Instagram/Facebook. Word of mouth is another HUGE contributor. My salon is in a pretty small town so when you do one clients hair, people talk and suddenly you are doing all of the friends and family’s hair.
