Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emmanuel Naylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Emmanuel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
My biggest risk was starting the barbershop. I had just enough money to start, but not enough to maintain the bills. The shop didn’t take off like I anticipated, I needed the business to be successful in 3 months. After that I had to choose between paying for my apartment or the rent for the commercial building. I ended up losing my home over the business, I’ll say that was my biggest risk.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was a kid, I always felt uncomfortable in a barbershop. The atmosphere was intimidating, overall just not a welcoming place. I wanted to change that. The Cut & Chill Lounge is exactly that a breath of fresh air. The atmosphere is a lounge and barber shop. Where everyone can feel comfortable. What we are most proud of is. We Change lives. We help people earn jobs. We get people ready for weddings all sorts of life changing events. We are more than a haircut, it’s bigger than a barber shop. We strive to give back to the community.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
My team is exactly that my team. One component no parts more important than the other. Keeping high energy is easy because I know each and everyone on the team personally. I know their birthdays down to favorite foods and personal problems. I do everything in my power to help with any situation. In turn they take care of the business as it’s their own. That’s because it is there business, I strive to instill the entrepreneur mentality into everyone on my team.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I was so tired of living paycheck to paycheck, not only that I had a son. That was the final line for me to get my life together. I raised capital by not taking any days off. I worked seven days a week for months two different jobs.
