We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emma Terrazas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up, sports were my life. My parents accepted that I was a pretty big tomboy but never made me feel a certain way about it- they loved me exactly how I was.
I remember cutting the grass, taking out the garbage, and helping my dad with projects around the house. I felt I was treated the exact same way my brother was. I’ve always been out to destroy social norms because of this!
Looking back, I really appreciate them letting me be me, not forcing me into a box just because I was a girl.
This gave me unwavering inner confidence as an athlete and as an ambitious young woman and has 100% carried over in my professional career as a coach and actor. Now of course I still work through limiting beliefs from time to time, as all people do…
It always makes me sad when I hear people say ” girls are hard….” when talking about rearing children. Raise a girl the same way you would raise a boy! Why does it have to be so difficult?
I’m not a parent yet, so maybe I just don’t get it…. but I have 7 nephews and everyone I speak to says, ” you’ll be the one stuck with all the girls,” and always say, ” I hope so!” and I mean it.
Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I identified as an athlete my whole life, but after my collegiate lacrosse career ended, I felt extremely lost. Add a bad college break up into the mix, and I felt as if I lost my whole identity post college.
Fitness and health always came easy to me- but this time, it was more important than ever for me to figure out why I wanted to work out and be healthy in the first place- it was to get myself back. I doubled down on not only my workouts, but I started working IN as well ,creating routines around self-care, self love, and self discovery… what I now call ” creating grounding rituals.”
I discovered that the more I dove into my own personal happiness and health, figuring out ” what was next” for me in both coaching and acting came so much easier.
Fast forward 5 years… now I help other high achievers do the same! I’m a health and life coach for entrepreneurs and business owners who are ready for their next level selves to make more impact and more income in business without hiring the next shiny coach, but instead- investing more attention to their own personal health and happiness.
I work 1:1 with business owners to create a highly personalized roadmap to help them reach their goals and finally become the next level version of themselves that they know they are- whether that is weight loss, feeling more confident in their own skin, teaching them how to eat on their busiest days to have better energy, and/ or creating workout routines that they’re excited for! With accountability and daily support, the sky is the limit to what we can dream up and accomplish.
Working with other business owners is so fun for me because we also talk about business! Now I am not a business coach, but I help them create the habits necessary to reach their income and impact goals. This is what really sets me apart from your average personal trainer- I take a wholistic approach to your wellness and lifestyle- I get it as an entrepreneur and multi- passionate person myself. I know the mental fortitude it takes to run a business.
I truly believe I’ve cracked the code to stepping into the next level version of yourself and what people get wrong… it’s not investing in your marketing strategy or expanding your team…. it’s you finally feeling like yourself again because you actually know how to eat to have energy during the day, have boundaries around your personal time so you *gift* yourself space to listen for “what’s next” for you. All while feeling more fulfilled when the work day ends as well.
One of the best compliments I ever got was ” Emma, I felt so comfortable coming to you for help because i know you wouldn’t judge me.” I GET IT. Life happens, and your business took priority over your life. AND NOW it’s time to take your power back over your health to quantum leap into what’s actually possible for you. I believe when you feel amazing in who you are and in your body, it’s easier to believe that your wildest dreams are possible for you.
I basically help people be confident in themselves… that they’re worth going for their wildest dreams because they feel amazing in who they are and in their bodies.
And how my acting career ties into all of this and how I started…my brother-in-law cast me in his film as the lead role of a girl assassin… and I’ve been hooked ever since. I recently created a webseries and short film called “Lana and Emmy” with my friend and co-star Lani Stait! It’s about two unconventional roommates going through the ups and downs of life together. It’s basically a slice of life that highlights positive female friendships. We do not see enough of that in the media, so we created it ourselves!
So not only do I know what it’s like running a business, but I know what it’s like to have big dreams! I also have a podcast where I share my personal ups and downs as a multi-passionate human along with sharing stories of other ambitious people to show that our trials and tribulations connect us in community.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’ve never shamed people because of their current health situation. When I’m on discovery calls with potential clients, I strive to come from a place of curiosity and understanding to figure out if I can actually help them.
If not, I always point them in the right direction to the best of my ability. Always encouraging people to keep going, believe in themselves, and being vulnerable in my own journey is what I hope to be known for.
I’ve had ups and downs in my business and in my own health, and I want people to know about them. Like how I struggled to get back into weight lifting after the pandemic, how I gained 10lbs in my corporate job after college and how I psychologically delt with that, and how lonely it can be living a multi-passionate life as a health coach and actor. We have to deal with rejection daily lol so this is why I swear by investing in your own personal health and happiness!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I work with both men and women, but working with women tends to come with a lot more healing. A lot of times, I’m helping women unlearn all of the societal norms we’ve been taught that hold us back from our potential and from truly feeling happy about ourselves:
” be small and don’t take up too much space.”
*skinny is better*
* don’t eat too many calories*
*if you’re not married with kids by 30 you’re a failure.”
…the list goes on!
So when a female entrepreneur comes to me feeling uncomfortable in her body and frustrated with her lack of results, it’s GAME ON! I toss a middle finger to society as we work through limiting beliefs and replace them with new ones:
* I love myself exactly as I am”
* I can make a boat load of money in my business*
*I am worthy of all my desires”
This deeper aspect of my coaching drives me to continue on when things get hard. It is so important for the younger generation of girls and boys to see confident and healthy women, and for women to never feel held back because of how they feel about themselves. This also impacts how they show up in their business and how much money they make. Women with more money do more good for their communities!
Also on screen- more representation of confident women of all different colors and backgrounds matters! Representation matters!
