We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Schultze. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Emma, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My middle name is Joy. The people who know me best often refer to me as “Emma Joy”, instead of just “Emma”.
The story behind my name is very unique and special to my family!
After my mom suffered through a miscarriage, she had a dream in the night. God spoke to her and told her: “you are pregnant with a baby girl. She will be named Emma Joy, because she will bring you much happiness after much sorrow.”
My mom woke up, told my dad they were pregnant – and nine months later, I was born.
No pregnancy tests, or ultra sounds to confirm whether this was real or not. My parent’s devout faith was more than enough for them.
The more people that know me as Emma Joy, the more hearts my story touches. It especially makes my mom happy. 💗
Therefore, Joyful Hair Co was born!

Emma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
One thing that is relevant, is my devout work in the bridal industry. To be a part of such a special day in someone’s life, is so meaningful to me. My main goal when working with any type of clients, whether it’s a Bride, or someone in my studio; is to spread joy and kindness. To connect with someone on a deeper level. To have them feel heard, and made known that they are important and beautiful.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
This is a great question! One thing I had to unlearn, was finding pride in unhealthy habits. For example, sharing with a friend in the industry: “ugh today was so busy! I haven’t gone to the bathroom or eaten anything in several hours.”
This pattern of anti self-care, was something a toxic work place takes pride in. To be SO busy, you ignore your basic human needs.
How ridiculous!! No client wants their hairstylist crossing their legs and doing the potty dance during their haircut. 😆
When we take better care of ourselves, we take better care of our clients.
Once I went out on my own, and was my own boss, my eyes were opened to the insane practices that we used to see as accomplishments.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Yes, my dear Lexie Rae!!!
Lexie and I met 6 years ago back in beauty school. We went to the same salon following graduation, where we worked at for 4 years before becoming business owners!
We’re technically not co-workers or business partners, but we do share our workspace/studio. We did set our space up together, and continue to share the workload of keeping the place clean and beautiful for our guests!
Lexie’s energy makes coming into work 1,000x more enjoyable. She’s a ball of fun energy! Her clients are a hoot, and she loves my clients too. We’re both fairly different people, but we click so well. I’m so happy to be able to see her and spend time with her almost daily!!
