Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emma Persaud . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Emma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My pursuit of happiness lead me to take the biggest risk of my life! the decision to be a full time freelance Makeup Artist was always a dream that I never thought would come true. I battled with negative thoughts and lots of doubt, was I good enough to be able to make a living doing makeup for clients? do I need to save a years worth of bill money first? I was very apprehensive and maybe my little makeup hobby should just be that- just a hobby I did on occasion for just friends and family.
I was tired of the ‘what if’ thoughts in my mind since deep down, I really wanted to challenge myself and see if I could really work for myself full time. Others have done it so why can’t I? The odds were against me, I had no back up plan but was ready to bet on ME for once. If it didn’t work out for me, at least the ‘what ifs’ my mind would die since I actually put in 100% and it didn’t work out. I’m happy to say that it did in fact work out for me and I’ve been successfully self-employed ever since. Take the risk on yourself, we only have one life to live, let’s live it to the fullest!
Emma , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Emma, owner of Faces By Emmy, a makeup company based in Scottsdale. I fell inlove with makeup artistry in 2013 and I’ve never looked back! I practiced really hard at my craft for years before I charged clients a dime and I’m so grateful that I’ve grown and been able to do makeup all over the world! I noticed that natural makeup was missing in the industry and most of my clients preferred natural looks so that’s what I decided to specialize in. My goal is to ensure that my clients feel confident and radiant whenever they sit in my chair and I hope to serve my community for many more years to come.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn in my makeup artistry journey is that keeping up with makeup trends or changing your signature look to follow a trend isn’t necessary to book clientele in my opinion. Your clients come to you because of the style of makeup you do or because of a particular look that you do exceptionally well. Trends are temporary so stay in your lane and do what your main clientele love that you do best!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is helping my clients feel better about themselves. Self esteem is powerful and being able to help someone dig themselves out of depression and help them want to love getting ready again in the morning truly makes my day. Using makeup as a tool is a great option because makeup is limitless and can make you feel like a million bucks!
