We were lucky to catch up with Emma Pelfrey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I was blessed with the most supportive and hard working parents around. Every positive quality I have is because of them. From a very young age I saw the true meaning of hard work, and why we choose to work hard. My mother inspires me greatly with her ability to pivot successfully. Growing up she was an elementary school teacher eventually moving up to being the principal at my school. She decided the school system was no longer benefiting her, so she started her own business. The business she started was so outside of her normal every day life, and it confused our family why she would want to go into woodworking. But she showed us exactly why, she’s made her income sustainable while working from home. And she’s happier than ever. While my dad has always shown me that work isn’t meant to be fun but it is rewarding. If it wasn’t for him pushing me, I would not be as successful as I am now. He instilled a work ethic in me that has allowed me to achieve everything I ever wanted.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My whole life I have worked with different creative mediums, but I was always drawn to computers. It never made sense to my how I could learn software so easily. It wasn’t until I was deep in my degree program at UCF that I found digital design. My job now as a graphic and web designer is exactly what I am gifted in, and what fulfills me. Not many people are able to make living off of their passions, but I am one of the lucky ones. I will be launching my own creative agency called Maison Blue, which will provide branding and digital services to new and existing clients needing help bringing their brand to life. My main focus is web design and would love to connect with fellow woman owned small businesses.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Something I’ve never doubted is my ability to talk to anyone and everyone. The best source for finding work is simple. Just talk to people. Social media is a tool and driving force for a lot of digital based work, but I have made most of my best connections through conversation. And it’s not always pretty, I’ve made career long clients through a conversation at Target. Everyone is a possible client, especially in my field. Harvest those relationships, and eventually they will lead you to a possible job or client.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
We have been living in a society where artists have not been seen as a true career path. I believe that NFTs have created a bridge between the logic thinkers of crypto and the artists of our generation, making a way for both to work together to make something new. The price of any art piece has always been what the viewer is willing to pay. The intentions of the piece can be as simple as a banana taped to a wall (as seen at Art Basal) or something as detailed as a surrealist piece by Salvador Dali. NFTs are as simple as digital art collecting, just with a few industry differences. If you’re asking me personally, I will always appreciate fine art more because it was made with the human hands.
