We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emma Olmedo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Floriography is a word derived from the Victorian Era. During those times, people would gift flowers to those they loved and each flower would have a meaning. (i.e. a red rose signifies love, a sunflower denotes loyalty and adoration etc.). Within my business, we use Floriography as a core value, ensuring that each and every floral arrangement reflects the love and personal style of each couple.
Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Emma and I’m the owner of Floriography. I started designing 9 years ago, working at a retail floral shop. After a few years in the retail industry, I freelanced for local wedding florists and ultimately started my own business, Floriography, 4 years ago. We specialize in custom, luxurious floral designs created exclusively for weddings. We’re known for grand, over-the-top designs and creations that transform a venue into an immersive experience for guests and couples alike.
Floriography is rooted in traditional, romantic and lush designs that are customized to compliment each couple’s style and vision. My process can be described as fun, easy and detail-oriented. I take on a very limited amount of bookings each year to ensure that couples are not a “number” on a list, but are instead given the time and attention that they deserve.
I approach each couple’s wedding design with new, innovative design suggestions. We are much more than a “florist”, but rather a “floral designer”, going the extra mile to ensure your entire wedding design is cohesive and memorable.
Family is the drive behind my business, specifically my 4-year-old daughter, Rosie. You’ll often find her hanging out at my studio, “helping”. Because of the support of my clients and fellow vendors who refer me to their clients, I am able to support her and follow my dreams of designing wedding florals for beautiful wedding celebrations all around Kansas City.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having the ability to create something unique everyday. No matter the wedding or color palette, I am constantly striving to invent new, cutting-edge designs and working hard to ensure no two creations are alike. Spending my days creating something as special as the designs to decorate someone’s wedding day is a true honor! I’ve always been a creative person and having a career that allows me to be creative each and every day is something I will always be so grateful for.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I started my business after becoming a mother to my now 4 year old daughter, Rosie. My business was created out of a want to have more flexibility within my career in order to be more available for her and to support the two of us. Through my business, I am able to make my own schedule and the possibilities of growth within my career are endless. All in all, my goal is to show my daughter that working hard, being kind and following your dreams all pay off in the end.
