We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Mitchell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Emma, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I wanted to name this business something that was symbolic of “joy”. While researching different words, animals, and symbols, I found that pink roses symbolize playfulness, joy, and femininity. I loved the idea of using the word Rosa, which means “rose”. After deciding this, I realized something else. For years, I’ve repeated this statement to myself: “Everything you need to flower is already inside of you.” This statement has become the tagline, and heart and soul, of my business.
Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Most of my career has been spent as an events and marketing professional. I started my own business in 2021, doing freelance work and hosting events to help people make new friends. Although the events were usually a success, I realized that my wellbeing was suffering. I was missing the joy from my life, as well as letting people see the real me. Long story short, I was bored, boring, and itching to let my authentic self out. I’ve been diving into self-work, meditation, spirituality, and energy work for 8+ years, and this really came to play when I became intentional about my own joy. I created my own playbook by utilizing healing methods, Reiki energy healing, artist expression, Joy Cheat sheets, embracing my inner child, and putting my true self out there through various activities. Once I began my journey of joy, I started finding my voice, true self, happiness, and best of all, friends who love me for me.
So I rebranded my business and am now on a mission to help women find more joy in their own life. Whether that’s through getting back to joy like we had as a child, better friendships, or just feeling more content, Rosa has something for you. There are guided one-on-one programs, as well as community events.
As a Joy Guide, I will walk you through a series of energetic healing exercises, inner child activities, art and journaling prompts, and discussions on how to bring out your divine feminine side. We will also have a strategic playbook of actionable homework and ways to connect in your community. Lastly, you’ll receive a Reiki session to help you let go of some energetic blocks that might be holding you back.
Currently, there are two guided programs:
– Journey Back to Joy program: Heal roadblocks, bring out your authentic personality, and release your inner child to find more happiness, peace, and fun in your life again.
– Find Your Tribe program: Get out of your shell and start meeting the close friends you want to do life with.
Additionally, there are monthly online and local (in Eagle County) community events to help you meet new friends through interesting activities, such as nature hikes, art, cooking, and more.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I’ve learned is that it is okay to let go of something you’ve worked hard to build. For me, it was my last business. My former business, called Emm Co., was a great first try at helping people find new friendships through events. A lot of people did make friends through these activities. But as I was going through my own journey, I realized it was important to let go of that brand and that business model. Although some of the concepts are the same, the new brand is so much more than that, getting really specific about guiding others in a joy journey and strategically finding new friends.
Emm Co. was so hard to let go, though, because it felt like a part of me. Heck, it was named after me! I grappled with it for months, even trying to use both names simultaneously. Ultimately, I knew it was holding me back from making real progress on my new business dreams.
After agonizing over this issue for so long, I finally did an emotional journaling project for myself. I made up this technique years ago to help me heal and work through issues. Once I did that journaling project and got out all my obstacles on paper, nothing could stop me! Within 1 day, I made the website, revamped my social media accounts, created a new email address, and shut down the Emm Co brand. It felt so liberating and I haven’t looked back since. I wrote a blog about it here: https://rosajoyco.com/art-journaling/
It can be so hard to let go of something, but once you do, you know it was the only way forward to better things.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In late 2021, I left a full-time salaried job to do my own events business. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it work, but I just knew in my heart that it was time to take a big leap of faith. Utilizing my many connections, I started asking around to see if anyone needed freelance work or part-time help. What happened then was nothing short of a miracle. Suddenly, people were being introduced to me and I was making money doing various contract work, such as database management, marketing, and administrative help. What started out as me thinking I would be doing event planning full-time, instead I ended up with a full-blown second business.
That was a huge mindset shift. At first, it was hard to get used to the idea of doing all this work for other people’s businesses, but now I look back at that time fondly. It was fun to help other small businesses with my skillsets and I learned so much from that time. I still do some freelance work for others, but I am mostly focused on my own business now.
This was a true example of my resilience, because I was able to figure out how to turn a difficult situation into something great. Yes, there were times I was scared about how I would pay the rent, but once I put my faith in things working out, it always somehow did.
