We recently connected with Emma Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Emma , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
In college I took a graphic design class and fell in love. I immediately changed my major from business to Advertising and Graphic Design. My Junior year I started gaining real like experience by getting graphic design internships in both non-profits and outdoor advertising companies. I decided this is what I wanted to do with my life so I started wanting to get even more experience. I started offering services to friends and family for very cheap and sometimes no cost at all to build my portfolio and learn along the way. As the years have went by my clientele has been growing by word of mouth and the authentic designs that I create. I believe my best asset that has drawn my clients to my business is my passion. I want to help these businesses tell a story and to create brands that perfectly fit them. I love working with small businesses the best and getting to know their family, their passions and to help them do what they love. Most of my clients have become friends and I am always here to help them grow or to help with any questions along the way.
Emma , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Emma Miller and I am the owner and designer at EM Designs, LLC. I fell in love with all things design in college and have been working to grow my business ever since. I am passionate about working with small businesses to bring their business to life and to help them get their stories across. I think it is a very special thing to meet these clients and to learn about their families, their backgrounds and to take all of their ideas to form into a visual identity for their business that perfectly represents them. At the end of the day I feel very proud to help and see these companies grow, always cheering them on along the way. I specialize in brand identities (logos, brand assets, etc.) but I also love working with my clients further to help them with their social media presence, packaging design, invitations, merchandise design and so much more. In a world of fast design I strive to always create custom and authentic designs that are unique to me clients.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is freedom. I have the freedom to express not only myself but to help express my clients passions and to meet so many other creative entrepreneurs along the way. I also really enjoy how every project is so different and even though it is my job to design strong branding, it is fun and something I truly love to do. I love the saying that if you do something you love you will never work a day in your life — and that is how I feel about graphic design and being able to partner with awesome clients and businesses.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my Fiance Michael in 2018 while I was finishing up college. At this time I was doing small projects for friends and family basically for free as I started to build up my portfolio. At this time I never thought I could start my own business and work for myself, I was preparing these jobs so I could apply for design jobs after college. Michael was always my biggest supporter and fan and pushed me to find more clients, help me research and set the correct price points and to really develop my own brand. Without him I definitely wouldn’t have pushed so hard to make EM Designs what it is today. At the beginning of our relationship we went through a lot of hard life situations. From trying to start a career after college, find our passions and figure out what our future was going to look like. 4 years later we moved to Kansas City, Mo., have 2 dogs and just welcomed our first baby Kaylem. To this day he always pushes our business that we have grown together. He gives me feedback on almost every single brand or design that I am working on, helps us keep track of the business finances and always supports our dream to keep growing.
