We recently connected with Emma Mcdonald and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Emma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is not linear. I have succeeded in many ways but have also failed. In those times of failing I have learned, taken those lessons and used them to grow. I think owning a business it’s important to celebrate the little wins but to always remind yourself that there will be a challenge in the future. As long as you have an understanding that there will be ups and downs.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an esthetician and pro mua based in Denver Colorado. I received my esthetician license about four years ago and have been taking a skin care first approach when it comes to my makeup applications. I have dealt with cystic acne most of my life and that was one of the reasons I decided to get into the esthetics and beauty industry.
I believe that everyone possess their own unquote beauty and I strive to unbridle their inner radiance of each and every one of my clients.
“Makeup is art” is my mantra, and resonates with my beliefs that the transformative power of makeup is an art form.
I specialize in natural glowy glam that enhances the unique and natural beauty of my clients. My approach is all about enhancing natural features.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have had cystic acne my whole life. I am 28 now and have just now gotten a hold on my skin. I almost cannot remember not wearing makeup if I left the house. It was embarrassing and debilitating. That is why I take a skin care first approach with my clients. Whether they come to me for makeup or skin services, prepping and taking care of the skin is the first step. I believe that with the correct amount of time and effort anyone can feel comfortable in their own skin. I have crossed that line of finally feeling good about my skin after years of working on it.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I feel like in this day and age social media is the best marketing tool. I grew up with Instagram and Facebook and when all of the social media apps were just becoming a thing. In a way I’ve grown up with socials and because of that I know how to reach my audience. I think it had changed how we promote and market our business, but it also is still a platform to share your craft. I think it’s one of the best tools to spread awareness of your business. It is a custom page tailored to you.
