We were lucky to catch up with Emma Goff recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advice I’ve ever given a client? Trust your body—it knows what it’s doing.
One of my clients—let’s call her Emily—came to me after years of feeling completely disconnected from her body. Growing up, she had been taught very little about her cycle beyond fear-based messages about avoiding pregnancy. She had spent over a decade on hormonal birth control—first the pill, then an IUD, then an implant—without really understanding how her natural cycle worked. On top of that, she had used emergency contraception multiple times, panicked because she didn’t know any other options. When she finally decided to stop using hormonal birth control, she felt completely lost and scared.
When we first started working together, Emily told me, “I feel like I don’t even know what’s going on in my own body.” She was terrified she wouldn’t be able to recognize ovulation or accurately track her fertile window, and the fear of getting pregnant felt overwhelming. That’s where I stepped in—not just to give her reassurance, but to teach her how to confidently track her cycle using a fertility awareness-based method.
Through structured learning sessions, I guided her in observing and interpreting her body’s natural fertility signs, specifically cervical mucus, basal body temperature, and cycle patterns. She learned how to identify ovulation with clarity and how to use her chart as a tool to understand her fertile and infertile phases. More importantly, we worked hard on building her confidence—so that she could trust her observations rather than second-guessing herself.
Slowly but surely, something incredible happened. She began to see her cycle clearly. She could recognize exactly what was happening each day—what her cervical mucus was telling her, what her temperature shifts meant, and how to confidently identify ovulation. The fear started fading, replaced by empowerment. One day, she messaged me and said, “For the first time, I actually know what’s happening in my body. I don’t feel scared anymore.”
That’s the moment I live for with every client—not just giving them facts, but helping them trust themselves. Emily’s story is a reminder that fertility awareness isn’t just about avoiding or achieving pregnancy; it’s about reclaiming what should have been ours all along—knowledge, confidence, and the ability to make informed choices without fear.
Emma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Emma Goff, the founder of Emmamma: Your Cyclical Doula. I am a Certified SymptoPro Fertility Awareness Instructor, Certified Miscarriage Doula, Reproductive Health Educator. I help busy women who are looking for a natural alternative to hormonal birth control by teaching them how to confidently track and interpret their fertility signs using a Sympto-Thermal Method. Through my work, I empower clients with the knowledge to avoid pregnancy, conceive naturally, or simply understand their cycles for better health—without fear or confusion. I support women from menarche (their first cycle) through menopause and all the motherhood in between.
Like many people, I didn’t grow up knowing much about my own fertility. I saw how so many women around me were put on birth control without fully understanding their cycles, and I realized that what was missing was education. It wasn’t just about preventing pregnancy—it was about body literacy, autonomy, and informed choices. I became passionate about helping others break free from the cycle of misinformation and fear that so many experience when it comes to their reproductive health.
That passion led me to become a certified educator in a Sympto-Thermal Method called SymptoPro, a scientifically backed approach that helps individuals track basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and cycle patterns to identify their fertile and infertile days. Today, I work with clients one-on-one and in group settings, guiding them through the process of learning and applying fertility awareness with confidence.
My work is centered around education, empowerment, and support. I offer:
Cycles Unlocked (1:1 Private Coaching Course) – A deep-dive, fully guided fertility awareness education program with private learning sessions and ongoing coaching for those who want personalized support.
SymptoPro Group Course – A structured, interactive course for those looking to learn a Sympto-Thermal Method in a group setting.
Fertility Foundations Webinar – A one-time session introducing fertility awareness-based methods and the science of cycle tracking.
Pathway to Pregnancy (Coming Soon!) – A mini-course for those trying to get pregnant, helping them optimize timing, mindset, and holistic fertility.
Free Community & Resources – I have a free online community called The Red Circle where people can learn, ask questions, and connect with others on their fertility awareness journey.
I believe fertility awareness and body literacy is for everyone—not just those trying to conceive. My approach is warm, science-backed, and practical. I focus not just on teaching the how of cycle tracking, but on helping clients gain the confidence to trust their own observations. I also provide unlimited lifetime messaging support to my clients, something that sets my coaching apart from many others. This means they’re never left feeling uncertain or alone on their charting journey.
Additionally, I’m a certified miscarriage and bereavement doula, which allows me to support clients navigating fertility awareness after pregnancy loss—a time when cycle tracking can feel especially overwhelming. My goal is always to meet people where they are, with compassion, clarity, and encouragement.
The moments that mean the most to me are when a client goes from fear and confusion to complete confidence in understanding their cycle. Whether it’s someone who finally sees ovulation happening after years on hormonal birth control, a couple that successfully uses fertility awareness for family planning, or a postpartum mom who regains trust in her body—those wins are everything.
More than anything, I want people to know that fertility awareness is not about restriction—it’s about freedom. It’s about understanding your body so well that you feel confident making informed choices, whether that’s avoiding pregnancy, trying to conceive, or simply embracing your natural rhythm.
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t really know what’s happening in your cycle, or if you’re tired of relying on external methods without full knowledge of your own fertility, I’m here to help. You can learn this, and you deserve to know your body.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I first started teaching fertility awareness, I felt this immense pressure to always have the perfect answer, immediately. I believed that being a great educator meant being a walking encyclopedia of reproductive health—never needing to say, “I don’t know,” and always having the most detailed, research-backed response at my fingertips.
But here’s what I’ve learned: true expertise isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about knowing how to find them and empowering others to think critically for themselves.
I remember working with a client who had a particularly tricky chart—her patterns weren’t fitting the textbook examples, and she was frustrated. In the past, I might have felt the need to give her an immediate, definitive answer. Instead, I took a step back and said, “Let’s explore this together.” We dug into her data, looked at multiple possibilities, and found the answer together. That moment shifted my entire approach.
Now, I embrace curiosity. If I don’t have an answer off the top of my head, I don’t see that as a weakness—I see it as an opportunity to learn, research, and grow with my clients. More importantly, I teach them how to think critically about their own charts, rather than just relying on me to tell them what’s happening.
Unlearning the idea that I had to know everything made me a better educator, a better coach, and a better advocate for body literacy. Because ultimately, my goal isn’t to be the source of all knowledge—it’s to help others trust themselves.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely—but with one big difference. I would have started sooner.
Fertility awareness education and body literacy have become my passion, my career, and my way of making an impact. Every time I see a client go from fear and confusion to confidence and clarity, I know I’m doing exactly what I’m meant to do. But if I could go back, I wish I had known earlier that this was even an option as a profession.
Like so many others, I grew up without a real understanding of how cycles work. I wasn’t told that my body had built-in signals that I could observe and trust. It wasn’t until I started learning fertility awareness myself that I realized just how powerful this knowledge is—and how much is missing from mainstream conversations about reproductive health.
If I could give my younger self advice, I’d tell her: “This work matters. People need this information. And you don’t have to wait until you feel ‘ready’ to start sharing it.” I would have started learning, teaching, and advocating for body literacy much earlier, instead of waiting for the perfect time (spoiler alert: there’s never a perfect time).
So yes, I’d choose this path again in a heartbeat. Because nothing compares to helping someone finally understand their body in a way they never have before—and watching that knowledge transform their life.
