We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Gilbert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Emma, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I started my painting journey at a young age and have since made a living through my art. Eventually, I transitioned from painting on canvases to creating murals. This shift became a necessary endeavor when I decided to embark on countrywide travels, making it impractical to carry around canvas supplies. Instead, I saw murals as a practical way to generate income while reducing the need for a surplus of materials. From my very first mural to the present, my focus has evolved. Murals have transformed into a means of creating art for a broader audience, a platform for me to voice my message, rather than simply painting canvases for personal expression.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My aim in creating murals is to foster a sense of community through art. I strive to install murals that can alter perspectives and stir emotions. My aspirations include collaborating with brands that empower individuals, establish innovative environments, and ignite inspiration within the community.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn when becoming an artist was to shift my perspective that becoming a full time artist was impossible to knowing how hard the journey would be but doing it anyway.
