We were lucky to catch up with Emma Fischer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
When I got started with concert photography, I knew I needed a portfolio before I could even think about charging anyone. Some part of me was sure I could do it, but I just needed the work to prove that I could. I started by going to local shows and photographing for free. The small local artists were always happy to have any kind of pictures. Eventually, I got to a point where I had built up a portfolio on my Instagram page. Enough so, that I got contacted by a local band I hadn’t shot with before. I’m still building my freelance business but it just began to snowball to a more steady stream of work. I just had to put myself out there and continue to do so

Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I am Emma Fischer. I consider myself a photographer, graphic designer, and all-around creative person. My degree and my day job are in graphic design. I am self-taught in photography and my experience has given me a wide range of knowledge in regards to digital production. While I was in college, I got the idea that I wanted to do concert photography. I had always been in love with concerts and photography, so it just made sense to combine the two. I started by photographing local shows and have now photographed so many of my favorite artists (like Boygenius, Clairo, Ashnikko, etc.) I have even had the chance to work with some incredible artists directly, like Laufey and Grouplove. I don’t have any specific goal in mind with my career. I just want to see what I can accomplish. I am so grateful for what the journey has brought me, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next. Concert photography is my biggest passion, but I just love providing my creative lens to clients that I believe in–there is something so special about it.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The only way to build an audience on social media is just to put yourself out there! As you post more, you’ll gain more traction and learn how to navigate the ever-changing algorithm. There’s no guidebook because of how frequently it changes, but doing it more and more will give you a sense of what you need to do to keep up.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is all the people. Being on my creative journey has introduced me to some of my best friends, and the most inspiring people I have ever met. It’s allowed me to network and connect with so many cool musicians I never knew I’d even get a chance to see. Being at a concert is such a human experience, I feel most at home when I’m there. The second aspect is just getting to see the world through my lens. I love being able to create imagery that no one but me could create and continue to surprise myself with what I can make.
