Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emma Evans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emma, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
It’s all about perspective. Growing up I had extremely talented parents who worked hard for everything they made. My families goal was to support and love to the fullest. I wasn’t always thankful when I was younger because you would look around at your friends and everything that their families had (money, materialistic possessions, expensive travel) and think wow they are successful. After graduating school it flipped a switch in me that success is strictly what you want to make of it. Success is where your heart lies, it’s a passion project that continues to motivate you and do better in the world. Success takes hard work and value at whichever level you decide.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started Harlow House Studios in 2021, after working in the hair industry since 2017. I dropped out of college with the mindset that whatever I did next I had to use my fullest potential. With a costumer service background I knew one day I wanted to create a space that was welcoming and loving. I think the most fun part about this industry is that it’s trendsetting and forever changing, so I took that in with a business model that is open to growth. I’ve created a luxury extension salon to improve natural beauty with the help of an incredible team. I’ve always loved the saying it’s not where you are or what you’re doing it’s the people that grow the experience. That’s what we create- a custom experience to help educate and empower.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Unfortunately it’s normal in the hair/service industry that when you leave/get fired from the business, you are stripped from your clientele and removed immediately (same day). In April of 2021, I was fired from a previous salon without real reason. It was a sink or swim experience for me, I had worked there for almost four years and helped build the business. I am forever grateful for the opportunity that I was given and it turned out being a blessing in disguise to start up my own, I commuted 35 Miles and rented a 100 sq ft studio due to a noncompete contract (not ideal) and thankfully had a clientele that found me and followed. During this time, found a new property that was closer to my home and started building out and renovating the 1,000 sq ft space to create a whole new beginning. Hired 2 employees since then and continue to grow and upgrade it daily. It was a year of trial and error, good hair, and loads of support. Thankful for growth.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
People are always the answer. Our main goal is to create a community that brings happiness not only externally but internally. Organically I grew a clientele with some help by posting on Instagram for free. Now there’s 2 stylists that are able to build their books by referrals and online search. I believe that if you stay in tune with customer experience it will go much further than any money you can spend on ads. Posting a portfolio online, keeping it accessible to the public and staying honest on what you can offer will help build your book.
