We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Eubanks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Emma, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope my legacy is one of an artist that cared- about the people around me, near or far, and more for them than what I sought to gain in my career.
I love being recognized for my work and the effort I put into it, but when I’m gone I would like the creations I put into the world to have had meaningful place in hearts beyond mine.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an illustrator and designer from Minnesota. I grew up in a creative family, one where my passion was always encouraged, and I never had to consider a future without art as the central driving force.
I am a digital illustrator, and most of my work is inspired by daily life (commutes, leisure time, nightlife) in the Twin Cities. My emphasis on exaggerated shapes and color to depict humanity and celebrate life in the city are what sets me apart. I’m the most proud of depicting my communities in a way that is as eclectic and exciting as being a part of them feels, and that I’ve had opportunities to do so for public works, like murals and van wraps.
I’m passionate about early education, and am also really proud of the work I’ve done for education-focused orgs, libraries, and authors.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am constantly walking a fine line between creating art that I feel is necessary and functions as a depiction of my world, and working within the confines of a capitalist world. My main goal is to make art that is nourishing to me and to have a fulfilling career without doing either at the expense of others.
I’ve had jobs in the past that were exciting to me creatively and paid well, but at the expense of feeling secure in my moral standing when the work was done. Moving forward in my career, I’m driven to work with partners or for causes that resonate with me and that I can back wholeheartedly.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the main thing that has helped build my reputation is being consistent in my values as my career and life have progressed. I do work that I feel strongly about and believe in, and I maintain good working relationships because I’m proud to support my clients.
The personal work that I do, art or otherwise, reflects the same values so people think of me for opportunities they think I’ll enjoy.
