We recently connected with Emma Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Mikko’s Choice is inspired by my dog and horse and born solely out of a desire to help more animals. In 2015 I was working in the cannabis industry when my dog, Mo, was diagnosed with liver cancer and given only a few months to live. At the time, I saw how cannabis based products were helping humans–however, there were no pet products. I also had a wild mustang who was extremely anxious. There were no dog products and definitely no horse products. I used human products and sent my dogs cancer into remission for 4 years. That was enough for me to believe in the plant.
Based on a desire to help my own animals, I decided to bring it to market to help others as well. I waited a few years while I researched what the best products would be, and had friends test it as well. In that time a few pet products came to market, but I noticed they were all way under-dosed, aka not strong enough, to actually make a difference. So I set out to solve the problem of “I tired CBD, but it didn’t work.” Leading me to some of the strongest and best formulations of pet products you will find. I chose the brand name because Mikko is my horse’s name and I thought animals might choose this product if they knew it helped them–hence “Mikko’s Choice.”

Emma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the pet CBD industry while working in the human cannabis industry. During that time I used CBD to help my personal animals. I saw there were limited and not great pet products, so I sought to change that by creating my own. I now offer high quality and strong formulations of products for dogs, cats, horses, pigs and any other animal! The formulations are what set Mikko’s Choice apart from other brands. Mikko’s Choice offers more CBD in less product per serving than other brands, which results in a product that actually works–while saving money!
I am continually blown away by the testimonials customers send me. They are the reason I keep going–my “why.” All I want to do is help as many animals as possible.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the beginning I started small with one skew–CBD pellets for horses. I found a manufacturer who I thought I could trust. After a few years, an order I placed with them never showed up. As I was running out of product, I hounded them to know where it was. They kept stringing me along with false promises and I knew something was up. Through connections in the industry I learned they were going under. When I confronted them about this, they gaslit me. Well, I already paid for my order so I was either getting money back or the order. I ran out of product, my business was dead for 6 months. Lawyers got involved, I never stopped calling and finally I got my money back. Throughout that time I was searching for other manufacturers and hemp suppliers. My product was a speciality and therefore not straightforward to make. I did eventually find a new manufacture, which lead me to launch The All Animals Tincture–while I continued to look for a way to make the pellets. Now I have great manufacturing teams, which have lead me to create new products like the tincture, dog treats and another coming soon!

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started working at age 14 and have saved the entire time. When I started Mikko’s Choice I started with a few thousand dollars of my own money. It has been 6 years now and I have not taken on investors or infused any more money into the business. I just keep reinvesting into it with money from sales.
